To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, LIVY T. TUCKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at VVhiteside, in the county of Lincoln and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in Barrel-Draining Devices,
, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a device for facilitating draining or emptying oil-barrels into tanks.
The device is designed particularly for use by merchants or dealers handling oil or the like in quantities for enabling such dealers to conveniently and quickly empty the barrels of liquid into suitable supply or storage tanks, obviating the necessity for use of pumps or similar means.
F or a full description of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction of the means for effecting the result reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a device embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation. Fig. 3 is an end view of the invention.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
In its practical embodiment the invention comprises, mainly, a substantial support consisting of approximately V-shaped end frames A, having the sides thereof connected at the lower portions by transverse bars 1. The frames A are connected at the upper por tions by means of longitudinal bars 2, and a similar bar 3 connects a side of each of the frames at the lower extremities, as shown most clearly in Figs. 1 and 2. At the upper portion of the support are located braces 1, which connect the bar 2 with the sides of the frames A at the ends of said bar. A windlass-shaft 5 is journaled in suitable bearings in the frames A of the support, and one end of said shaft extends outwardly from one of the end frames A to admit of mounting a sprocket-wheel 6 thereon. The wheel 6 is formed with a ratchet extension 7, projecting therefrom toward the frame A adjacent, and a pawl 8, pivoted to said frame, is adapted to engage the ratchet extension to hold the shaft 5 from revolving under conditions of service described hereinafter. The sprocket 6 is of course keyed to the shaft 5. Suitable cables 9 are adapted to wind upon the shaft 5, and near the ends of this shaft upon the inner sides of the frames A are provided spaced disks 10 to limit the winding move ment of the cables 9 in a manner apparent. The cables 9 are arranged at opposite ends of the support embodying the frames A, and these cables are adapted to elevate a barrel preparatory to draining or emptying the same. The shaft 5 is actuated by a crank-handle 11, which is connected with a sprocket-wheel 12, mounted upon a pin 13, which projects outwardly from a side of one of the frames A, said sprocket-wheel 12 being connected by a sprocket-chain 14 with the wheel 6, so that revolution of the crank-handle 11 will impart the necessary rotation to the shaft 5.
Cables 9 are arranged to support clamp devices at their lower ends, said clamp devices being adapted to engage opposite ends of the barrel to be emptied, in order to afford a connection between the cables and the barrel to facilitate elevation of the receptacle.
- The barrel is indicated at 15 in the drawings,
and the end clamp devices consist of divergent arms 16, 17, and 18. The arms 16 are of the same length, the arm 18, however, being somewhat longer. Lateral extensions 19 project from the arms 16, 17, and 18 of each clamp device, and the extensions 19 of the arms 16 and 17 are adapted to directly engage the barrel 15 at the adjacent ends thereof. The extension 19 of the arms 18, however, is provided with a threaded opening therein, in which is mounted a feeding-screw 20, provided at one end with a suitable handle 21, the opposite end of the screw engaging a clamp-plate 22, which is slidable longitudinally of the arm 18. The clamp-plate 22 is arranged to engage positively with the end portion of the barrel adjacent, and said clamp-plate is formed with hooks or similar members 23, located at one end thereof and adapted to engage about the arm 18 to prevent displacement of the clamp-plate therefrom. Each of the clamp devices for cooperation with the barrel at opposite ends are of the same structure.
Adjacent the point where the several arms of the clamp devices meet is located an opening, through which passes a pin 24, the inner portion of which is threaded to screw into the opening in the clamp device, and said end may come into contact with the adjacent head of the barrel, the outer portion being shouldered and provided with an annular groove 25. Each supporting-cable 9 is provided at its lower extremity with a link 26, wider at its upper portion than at its lower extremity, so that this link may have one of the pins 24 passed through the wider portion, and by slidable movement 01 the link the contracted or narrower portion will en age in the groove of said pin. The link 26 will thus be prevented from accidental disengagement from the pin 24, with which it is connected, and as said pin passes through the opening in the clamp device adjacent it will be noted that the cable will be directly connected with said clamp device at about the central portion of the latter. The barrel 15 is supported by the cables 9 through the connections 26 and engaging the pins 24 of the clamp device is free to rotate.
A special form of bung B is preferably used in connection with the invention, and said bung is inserted into the bung-hole of the barrel after the latter has been placed in position supported by the cables 9. The bung B coinprises a body 27 and reduced tubular extension 28 at one end. The inner extremity of the extension 28 is squared to facilitate rotation of the bung for obvious purposes. The body 27 of the bung B is of course tapered, and a U-shaped air-tube 29 passes through the body 01 the bung, the ends of this tube projecting laterally therefrom. At the outer end of the tube 29 the same is provided with a valved member 30, the valve of which is indicated at 81.
Describing the actual use of the invention, preparatoryto emptying or draining a barrel said barrel is rolled into a position between the end frames of the support, approximately beneath the Windlass-shaft 5. The clamp devices embodying the arms 16, 17, and 18 are now engaged with opposite ends of the barrel, the clamp-plates 22 being adjusted by the screws 20. The above having been done, the pins 24 are-passed through the openings in the clamp devices, and it will be understood that each of these devices may have one or more openings, as found desirable, in the practical embodiment of the invention, 1 after which the links 26 of the cables 9 are engaged over the pins 24. The barrel is now ready to be hoisted, and the operator grasps the crank-handle 11 and operates the windlass mechanism so as to raise the barrel the desired height, where it will be held by the ratchet devices 7 and 8. The plug of the bung-hole of the barrel is now forced in and the bung B of the barrel is screwed in position, after which the barrel is rotated, so that the bung will assume a lowermost position with reference to the bodyof said barrel. A tube or flexible hose of any kind may now be connected with the extension 28 of the bung and will lead off to the tank into which the contents of the barrel are to be emptied. The valve 31 may now be opened and the contents of the receptacle will drain therefrom in a manner which will be apparent.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is In means of the class described, the combination of a support, barrel-engaging clamp devices, each of said devices comprising in tegral divergent arms provided with lateral extensions at their outer extremities, a feedscrew mounted in an extension of one of the arms, a clamp-plate slidable longitudinally of the arm carrying the feeding-screw and coacting with said screw, hooks projected from the clamp-plate and engaging the arm adj acent thereto to connect the clamp-plate with the arm, pins projected from each clamp device adjacent the point where the several arms thereof meet, said pins being provided with annular grooves, hoisting means mounted upon the support and embodying a windlass and hoisting-cables connected therewith, and links connecting the hoisting-cables with the pins of the clamp devices, said links being narrower at one end, the narrow portions of the links receiving the pins of the clamp devices and engaging in the grooved portions thereof.
