Be itknown that LJoi-IN E. LAFFIN,o'f Wentworth Location, in the county of (loos and State of New Hampshire, have invented a new and Improved Barrel-J ack, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates to a device to facilitate the handling' of barrels or casks to elevate or lower them to any desired elevation, and it is also arranged to make the placing and removing of the barrel an easy operation.

The device is particularly adapted for holding casks in which things are kept on di'a'ft or on tap and is to be used more by merchants, who have to frequently move or replace the barrels.

The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a eide view of the barrel-jack, and Fig. 2 is a section on line 2 2 in Fig. 1.

The constructionof the jack embodies a pair of string'ere 10, having on one end an inclined surface 10iL and being provided with the casters 11 to allow the shifting of the jack. On the end of the stringers opposed to the inclined end are arranged the uprights 12, having a cross-piece 13, into which is journaled a threaded shaft 14, the other end of the shaft being ,iournaled in the bearing 15. nhis shaft 14. is threaded its entire length and is provided at its top with a miter Worm-gear 17 on the shaft 18. A crank 19 provides means for turning the Whole mechanism.

A pair of stringere 20 are arranged in the sleeves 21, that embrace the uprights 12, supplemental sleeves 22 and bolts 23 serving to stiflen the stringere 2O and assisting them in maintaining' the load. The cross-bar 24, connecting the sleeves 21, is provided with a nut 25, through which passes the threaded rod 111, the rotation of the rod thereby affecting the elevation of the stringere 20. Slight depressions 26 may be made in all the stringere to prevent the rolling of the barrel or cask after it is in place, or the usual stops might be employed. The ends of the stringere 20 have inclined faces 27, and when the stringere E20 are lowered to rest on the strin, 'ers 10 the inclined faces 10 and 27 Aform a ready means for the handling of a barrel or allow its easy rolling' up onto the stringere 20. lhen by rotation of the handle 19 through the mechanism hereinbefore described the stringers 2O can be raised up to any desired height, and, il desired, an additional cask can be placed on the stringere 10. ln this way a storekeeper could easily handle heavy barrels that contain liqnids to be kept on tap without much trouble, and the casters on the bottom of the device provide a ready means for shifting the whole 6o apparatus to any convenient part of the estabiishment.

It will be understood that the upper stringers .20 might be offset, so as to fold down inside or outside of the lower stringere 1() in- 65 stead of settling down upon them. This would allow their also acting' as brakes when in their folded position to prevent any rolling of the jack.

It will be seen that the connected base-string- 7o ers 10 form a secure base for the device, that the connected stringere Q0 :form a convenient platform, and that the parte 22 and 23 securely brace the platform.

Having thus fully described my invention, 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. Abarrel-jaek comprising a base having one end inclined, a pair of standards rising from the base, a movable platform arranged 8O to slide vertically on the standards, said platform having an inclined outer end, a sliding b race moving on the standards and connecting' with the platform, and a gear mechanism to raise and lower theplatform.

2. A barrel-jack comprising a base formed of a pair of stringere, a pair of standards rising from the said stringere, a platform formed of parallel stringere, said platform, being mounted to slide on the standards, a crosspiece connecting the stringers of the platform, sleeves sliding on the standards and connecting by braces with the stringere of the platform, and a gear mechanism for raising and lowering the platform.
