. Be it known that l, PATRICK F. DENNING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in thel county of'Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useof which the following is a specification.

The invention relates to improvements in hat-'hangrs The o ject of the present invention is to improve the construction of hat-hangers, and to providea simple, inexpensive, and effiadapted for ho ding the hats of both ladies and' gentlemen, and designed particularly for use in theaters, halls, and various other places move their hats, and capable of clamping the rim of a ladys or gentlemanshat and of also enablin the hat of a lady'to be pinned to it when t ehat is made or trimmed in a manner which will not admit of its being to tear or otherwise injure hereinafter fully described, il

A rther object'of the invention is to provide a device of'this character which may be readily a plied to the back of a seat and which will) not present any projections liable dresses made of delicate fabrics. y

Also the invention has for its object to provide a hat-hanger havinr a sound-deadening device whereby the hat-hanger will be es ecially adapted for use in churches and ot er places where noise is undesirable.

With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arran ement of parts ustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended.

The pivot pierces the side walls of the'casing, as clearly shown in Fig. 8 of the drawings and itsiends are flared or enlarged to form heads for retaining it in the perforations of the casing. The intermediate portion of the pivot receives a coiled spring 12, the terminals 13 and 14 of which are extended in opposite directions and are engaged, respectively,with the lever and with the casing. The terminal 13 engages the upper portion of the lever, and the other terminal 14 bears against the casing, at the lower end wall thereof.

The lower end of the clamping-lever is bent vertically to form a flat hat-engaging lip 15, which cooperates with a cushion 11, adapted to assist in gripping a hat and capable also of deadening the sound incident to the closing of the clamping-j aw. The lever is bowed outwardly above the lip 15 to provide a substantially U-shaped intermediate portion or loop 16, which is arran ed to receive the ed e of the rim of a hat, wiereby the lever is adapted to clamp the rim without affecting the.

which is arranged to clear the edge of the l lower end wall at the front or outer end of the l opening 4.

The cushion, which is arranged opposite the hat-engaging lip of the clamping-lever, may be constructed of soft rubber or any other suitable material, such as felt, to enable a hat to be firmly clamped without crushing or otherwise injuring the same, and it consists of inner and outer heads and a reduced connecting-neck 18, which is arranged in an opening 19 of the lower portion of the attachment plate or flange of the casing. The outer face of the cushion is ilat or concave, and the inner tace 20, which may also be flat, is preferably rounded and is spaced from the supporting-surface 21 to provlde an intervening space for the passage ot a hatin or hat-pins. The cushion may be spaced Ecm the supporting-surface by any suitable means; but the lower portion of the attachment-plate is preferably angularly bent at opposite sides of the center to 'form a raised or projecting portion 22, which provides a narrow lower pin-receiving space. The top of the casing is provided with a plurality of countersunk perforations 23, adapted to per.- mit a hat-pin to be passed through the device from top to bottom, and the lower portion of a hat-pin will be clamped by the cushion, whereby the hat-pinl will be securely held in the device. The perforations 23 are countersunk to facilitate the introduction of a hat-pin, and. by enabling the hat to be either'clamped or pinned it will be apparent that the device isl adapted for holding mens hats and all kinds of ladies hats.

In Fig. 5 of the drawings is illustrated a modiiicati on of the invention, the hat-hanger being designed especially for use on churchpews and the cushions 11a being compressed against the back of a pew to deaden the sound more effectually. The cushion is provided in its outer face with a slight depression or cavity, which enables the deviceto be conveniently doubled or compressed to facilitate its introduction into the opening of' the lower portion of the casing, and a correspondsecured to the back ol a pew or other form of'seat the protuberance will be compressed against the same to form an effective cushion for deadening the sound incident to the closing of the clamping-lever. The compression of the protuberance lattens the outer face of the cushion by causing a bulging of the depression or cavity, so that a substantially flat ace is presented to the lip 15 of the lever.

The hat-engaging lip or jaw-'15 is preferably of semicircular or approximately semicircular form, and the curved edge is turned up or flared slightly in order to present a smooth rounde edge instead of a straight sharp edge, which might 'injure a hat. The

lever is provided between the lower lip or jaw and the upper end' of the bend 17 with a longitudinal rib adapted to strengthen the lever at the loop and bend and prefcrablyformed by grooving or bending the metal from the inner face, and by this construction the lever is sulliciently stitlened at the loop and bend to eflectually prevent those parts from being accidentally bent out of shape.

The device, which is designed particularly for clamping hats, may be employed for a variety of purposes and is capable of firmly clamping and securely holding various articles.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, ise 1. A device of the class described, comprising a casing having front and end openlngs, and a spring-actuated clamping-lever mounted within the casing and extending through the end openingfor exteriorly clamping an a1'- ticle, and also provided with a push-button projecting through the front opening, said push-button being flared.

2. A device of the class described, comprising a casing having front and end openings, and a spring-actuated lever mounted within the casing and extending through the end opening and provided with an exteriorly-arranged clamping portion and having a pushbutton projecting through the front opening, said lever being pivoted at a point between the push-button and the clamping portion.

3. A device of the class described, comprising a casing having frontl and end openings, a lever provided at opposite sides at an intermediate point with ears, and comprising an upper arm having a' hollow outwardly-projecting push-button s lit at opposite sides and flared and extending through the front opening, and a lower arm having an inwardlyextending bend at the bottom opening and rovided with a reversely-arranged projectlng loop and having a clamping-lip extending outward from the loop, a plvot passing through the ears and located between the clamping-lip and the usb-button, and a spring for actuating the ever.

4. A device ofthe class described, comprising a casing having a pin-receiving opening and provided with a pin-receiving space spaced from the opening, and means extending into the pin-receiving 'space for yieldably clamping a pin, whereby the same is retained in the opening.

5. A device of the class described, comprising a casing having a pin-receiving opening and vprovided with a pin-receiving space spaced from the opening, and a cushion extending into the pin-receiving space for yieldably clamping a pin.

6. A device of the class described having a pin-receiving opening and provided with a clampingjaw, and a cushion coperating IOO IIO

with the clamping-jaw, said cushion being also arranged to clainp a pin for holding the same in said opening.

7. A device of the class descriped provided with a pin-receiving opening and having an exterior clamping-jaw, and a cushion provided with interiorly and exteriorly arranged portions, the exteriorly-arranged portion cooperating with the clamping-jaw, and the interior portion being arranged to clamp a pin for holding the saine in the opening.

8. A device of the class described, compris ing a casing provided at the upper portion with a pin-receivingV opening and having a pin-receiving space at its lower portion eX- tending across the casing, and a cushion mounted on the casing and extending into the saine at the said space.

9. A device ofthe class described, comprising a casing provided at the top with a pinreceiving opening and having a raised portion located below the opening and forming a narrow space which extends across the casing, and a cushion carried by the raised portion of the casingr and. extending into the said space to clamp a pin.

A device of the class described, cornprising a casing provided at the top with a plurality of perforations and having a pin-receiving space at the bottom, a clamping-lever mounted on the casing, and a cushion coperating with the lever and extending into the space and being of sufl'icient width to engage a pin inserted in any one of the pin-receiving openings.

11. A device of the class described, comprising a casing, a spring-actuated lever fulcrumed at an intermediate point between the sides of the casing and extending through one end of the same, said lever having an o erating-arin which is provided with a pus i-button projecting at the front of the casing, the other arm of the lever consisting of a `Hat terniinal clamping portion to engage a hat beyond the rim, and an intermediate substantially U-shaped portion located between the fiat clamping portion and the pivot of the lever to receive the curled-up portion or rirn of a hat.

A device of the class described, coinprising a plate having a casing at one end, a cushion located at the opposite end portion of. the plate, and a spring-actuated lever fulcrurned at an intermediate point between the sides of the casing and extending through one end of the same, one arm of the lever consti tuting an operating-arm and provided with a push-button projecting at the front of the casing, the other arm of the lever consisting of a flat terminal clamping portion cooperating with the said cushion for engaging a hat beyond the rim, and a substantially U-shaped intermediate portion located between the clamping portion and the pivot to receive the curled-up portion or. rim of ay hat.
