MILKING STOOL.

Specification .of Letters Patent.
Patented April 1'7, 1906.
Application filed November 10, 1905. Serial No. 286,683.
To all whom, it 71m concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY H. KAGEY, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Ashland, Ashland county, Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Milking-Stools, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to milking-stools; and
it consists in the combination of a stool and pail-holder.
The objects of my improvement are to provide a stool with a seat mounted on a screwsupport to afford facilities for rotating and vertically adjusting it to correspond with the height of the cow or position of the milker.
A further object is to pivotally secure a pail-holder to the screw support in such a manner as to permit of its rotation and radial adjustment independent of the position or movement of the seat.
Another object is to provide means of retaining the pail-holder when rotated at any point'of its radial adjustment and to movably hold it in place under the pressure of the pailholder, pail, and contents during the operation of milking.
I attain these and other objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a milkingstool and pail-holder. Fig. 2 is a to view showing slots in pail-holder in dotte lines. Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view showing the pailholder in full lines and relative radial adjustment in dotted lines. Fig. 4 is a crosssectional plan view of the stool and holder, taken on the line meof Fig. 1, showing method of clamping.
In the drawings, a re resents the legs of the stool, having a nut-b ock b secured to the upper portion. An interiorlyscrew-threaded nut 0, having an annular outwardly-extending flange d, is fitted to an annular groove in the block. The flange supports the nut. A screw-support composed of a tang e and a plate f is provided with the late secured to the bottom of the seat 9 by t e bolts h. The screw-threaded tang engages with the screwthreaded interior of the nut, affording a means of vertical adjustment of the seat and pail-holder. The upper end of the tang 'i is upset with the under portion made rectangular and fitted to a similar aperture in the plate to prevent the plate from turning on the tang when the seat is rotated for vertical adjustment to correspond with the height of the cow.
A collar k is formed on the tang and isv adapted to support a washer 7c, upon which a pail-holder k rests. The pail-holder is pivotally secured to the upper portion of the tang, which meshes with the slot 1?, located in the end of the holder, providing a means of radial adjustment. A slot is is cut in the pail-holder in front of and in direct alinement with the slot 763. A bolt 1, having a portion m of the collar m reduced, is fitted and inserted in'the slot 76*, leaving the end of the bolt projecting over the surface of the holder.
An L shaped block or clamp m is secured to the pail-holder by the bolt 1, which passes through an aperture in the clamp and is adjustably retained in place by the winged nut m*. The projecting portion n of the clamp extends over the top of the seat, lying in close contact with the surface. A pin it is rigidly secured to the projecting portion or of the clamp, depending downwardly and meshing with the annular groove 77?, formed in the top of the seat. WVhen the pail-holder is radially adjusted to conform to the requirement of the milker, the clam 3 is fastened by the bolt and nut, securely hdlding the pail-holder at any fixed radius when the seat is rotated. The radial movement of the pail-holder is governed by the length of slots and 76 The projecting portion of the clamp n and pin n is so arranged with relation to the top of the seat and outer wall of the annular groove as to be brought in frictional contact therewith when the pail is placed in opening 0 of the holder, thereby affording a means of retaining the holder in a fixed position under the pressure or weight of the parts, pail and contents, and of changing the position of the holder rapidly if for any reason the cow has moved or changed her position during the operation of milking. v A washer p is interposed between the bottom of the seat and'the to of the holder to permit free and indepen ent movement.
It will be observed that the milker can perform the operation of milking and change his position by rotating his seat without affecting the position of the holder, or the position of the holder can be changed without changing the position or rotating the seat, as both are pivotally secured to the screw-sun port independent of each other. A handle p is secured to the clamp for the purpose of carrying the pail-holder and stool.
The construction of the milking-stool and pail-holder as described provides a radial or longitudinal and vertical adjustment and a means of rotating the holder and seat inde pendent of each other, which is of great advantage.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a combined milking-stool and holder, a screwsupport, a pail-holder having slots formed therein in alinement with each other and pivotally secured to the said support, a seat secured to the plate of said support, a washer interposed between the seat and holder, said seat and holder adapted to rotate independent of each other.
2. A combined milking-stool and pail-holder comprising a screw-support, a seat mounted thereon, a washer supported upon a collar on said screw-support, a pail-holder pivotally and adjustably secured to said support whereby said pail-holder can be rotated and radially adjusted, a clamp secured to the pailholder having a projecting portion extending over the top of the seat, a pin secured thereto meshing with an annular groove in the seat movably retaining the pail-holder at any point of its radial adjustment, means for vertical adjustment of the seat and pail-holder as described and set forth.
3. In a milking-stool the combination of a stool and pail-holder, comprising a screwsupport, a nut adapted to engage with said screw-support providing vertical adjustment, a seat pivotally secured to said screwsupport, a pail-holder pivotally secured to said screw-support, said seat and pail-holder secured to said screw-support in such a manner as to permit either to rotate independent of each other or together, means for radial adjustment of the pail-holder.
4. The combination of a milking-stool and pail-holder, a screw-support for vertical adjustment, a pail-holder pivotally secured to said support, a seat rigidly secured to the plate of the screw-support, a washer interposed between the seat and the pail-holder, an annular groove formed in the top of the seat, a clamp secured to the pail-holder hav ing its projecting portion extending over and lying in close contact with the top of the seat, a pin secured to said projecting portion, meshing with said annular slot, means for retaining the holder in place under pressure by frictional contact by the weight of the parts and contents as described and set forth.
5. In a milking-stool, a screw-support, a nut secured to the legs of the stool, a seat securely attached to the plate of the screw-support said nut and screw-support roviding vertical adjustment and means of rotating the seat, a pail-holder pivotally secured to the tang of the screw-support, slots formed in said pail-holder for radial adjustment, a clamp secured by a thumb-screw and nut to the pail-holder, a depending pin or lug at tached to said clamp, an annular groove formed in the seat in alinement with the pin affording a means of retaining the pail-holder at any point of its radial adjustment under ressure, means for rotating said seat and pail-holder independent of each other as described and set forth.
Signed at Mansfield, .Ohio, this 6th day of November, 1905.
