To all whom it may concern-.-

. Be it known that I, ORA B. REED, a citizen A of the United States, residing at Decatur, in the county of Macon and State of Illinois,

have invented .certain new and useful I m- .provements in Window Shade and Curtain Hangers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains 'to make and use the same. I

My invention 1s an improved comblned window shade and curtain hanger adapted for use for hanging both a window-shade and a curtain or for hanging either of them; and it consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of devices hereinafterdescribed and claimed.

One object of my invention is to provideadevice of this character which may be'readily adjusted to enable shades of various widths to be hung thereby.

A further object of my invention is to effect improvements in the construction of the means for holding the'shade-roller.

A further-obj ect of my invention is to effect improvements in the construction of the devices which support the curtain-pole, so that the same are'enabled to be used in connection with curtain-poles of varying diameters.

A further object of my invention is to provide improved devices ofthis character which are exceedingly strong, which are adjustable,

and which'may be compactly folded, disposed in'a small space'for storage or transportation,

and which may be readily attached to and detached from a window-casing.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a combined windowshade and window-curtain hanger embodying my improvements, showing the same on a window-casing. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the same. Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken on the plane indicated by the line (to of Fig. 3, and Fig. 5 is a detail top plan view showing the construction of the pole-supporting hook.

My improved combined shade and curtain hanger comprises a base-section 1, a shaderoller-bearing member 2,. a bracket 3, and a curtain-pole-supporting hook 4.

The base 1 is made of sheet metal and comprises a horizontal arm 5 and a vertical arm 6 at one end thereof. The horizontal arm has its upper and lower edges folded reversely to provideguiding and supporting flanges 7. A

one end of the said arm 5 is an opening 8 for the reception of a nail or screw used to secure the base-section to the window-casing. The vertical arm 6 has at its outer side an outwardlyextending flange 9, which s confined to the upper portion of the said vertical arm. The latter is also provided with openings 10 1 1.

The opening 10 is for the reception of a nail or screw, which may be used to securethe base-section to the window-casing.

Theshade-roller-bearing member 2 is made I of sheet or plate metal and has an arm 12, which is slidable on'the arm 5 of the basesection 1 and is retained thereon by the flanges-7 thereof. At .the-outerend of the arm 12 is an outwardly-extending horizontallydisposed arm 13, which has a bearing opening or slot for the reception of one of the journals of the shade-roller. I It will be understood that since'the shade-roller-bearing member is longitudinally adjustable in the base-section the said bearing members at opposite sides of the window-casing may be adjusted toward and from each otherto enable wi-ndoweshades of various widths to be hung thereby.

The bracket 3 comprises the curved front portion 14, which is bent outwardly in order to clear the molding, if any there be, at the upper side of the window-casing, a vertical arm 15 ,which depends from said portion, 14,

and a horizontal arm 16, which projects inwardly from the upper end of said ortion 14. The arm 15 bears on the vertica arm 6 of the base-section 1 and against the flange 9 and is secured to the base-section by a screw or other suitable device 17 in an opening 18 of the arm 15, and which screw or other device also engages the opening 11 of the arm6. Thereby the bracket is pivotally and detachably connected to the base-section, so that it may be either folded against the same or detached therefrom when it is desired to use the said bracket. At the inner end of the arm 16 is a depending stud 19, which is adapted to be driven into the upper edge of the window-casing in order to secure the upper portion of the bracket thereto. The said arm 16- is further provided with an upstanding flange orwiden'ed portion 20, which has a plurality of transverse openings 21.

The curtain-pole-sup'porting hook 4 is here shown as bent from a single piece, of wire or 7 wire rod to form a doubled and. curved hook portion 22,adapted to receive a curtain-pole, and a pair of parallel arms 23, which are provided at their inner ends with inturned pivotal portions 24, adapted to be inserted in either of the openings 21, so as to adjustably,

detachably, and pivotally connect the said pole-supporting hook to the bracket 3. When the pole is placed in the hook 22, the latter becomes lowered to some extent by the weight of the pole until the pole bears against the outer side of the bracket 3, the latter thus coacting with the pole-supporting hook to support the curtain-pole. Furthermore, this construction of the bracket and of the polesupporting hook'enables curtain-poles which vary in diameter to be readily hung by my improved devices.

The bracket 3 and pole-supporting hook 4 may be dispensed with and onlythe base-section 1 and shade-roller-bearing member 2 employed, if it be desired to only hang a shade, or, if it be desired to only hang a curtain-pole, the base-section 1 and shade-roller-bearing member 2 may be dispensed with.

From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.

Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In combination with a bracket for attachment to a window-casing and having an inclined side, a hook having its inner end pivotally connected to said bracket for vertical angular movement and having its outer end upturned, said hook and bracket coacting to grasp a curtain-pole between the upturned outer end of the hook and the inclined side of the bracket and to support the said pole.

2. A combined Window shade and curtain hanger, comprising a base-section having a longitudinal arm and a vertical arm, the latter provided with an outstanding vertical flange, a shade-roller-bearing member dc taohably secured to the longitudinal arm of the base-section, a bracket having its lower end detachably secured to the vertical arm of the base-section and bearing against the outstanding flange thereof, said bracket being further provided with a horizontal arm to bear on the upper side of the window-casing, and a pole-supporting device connected to the horizontal arm of the bracket, substantially as described.
