.Be it known that I, JOHN S. FissnL, a citizen of the United States, residing at West Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Button-Fasteners; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to button-fasteners of that type designed for holding buttons in I place upon a garment and permitting the button and fastener to be removed at will. This class of fasteners have been found very desirable not only for attaching vest-buttons to washable vests, but for attaching insignia buttons and plain buttons to uniforms.

Theobject of my invention. is to provide a simple and easily-operated device for holding the button in place and permitting both the button and fastener to be readily removed from the garment. This object is attained by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a side view of a fastener made in accordance with my construction, and

Fig. 2 is a similar view showing a button connected to the fastener in position for use and showing in dotted lines the position of the button relatively to the fastener when in osition for removing the same from the eye ethole in the garment.

Referring to the drawings for a more particular description of my invention, the nuineral 1 designates the bodkin end of my button-fastener, which consists of a single strand of spring-wire of the proper gage. A loop 2 is formed in the wire at a point nearly central to the length of the fastener, and from the loop 2 the wire extends to form a member 3, which. is bent at 4 upon itself and extended into a spring-tongue 5, the terminal end 6. of which provides a spring-tongue which projects within the loop 2 at the center of the fastener.

To connect an eye-button to my fastener, the bodkin member 1 is passed through the eye 7 of the button, and the latter is moved toward the loop 2 in the fastener. The eye 7 of the button is forced against the springtongue 6 of'the fastener until it passes the same and occupies a position in the loop 2, as

To connect the button and fastener to a garment, the button 8 is moved from the position shown in full lines to the position shown in dotted lines in'said Fig. 2, and the bodkin member 1 is then inserted in the eyelet-hole in the garment to a point near the button, and the said button is then moved upon the arm 3 back to the position shown in full lines, leaving the fastener upon the under side of the garment and the button seated in .the loop 2 on the surface or front portion of said garment. To remove the button and fastener from the garment; the button is again moved upon the arm 3 to a position in line with the fastener, and the fastener is then withdrawn from the eyelet-hole.

From'the foregoing it will be understood that my fastener is designed to be connected to the button at all times and need not be detached from the button for the purpose of attaching or detaching the button to and from the garment. This is a. feature of some importance, owing to the fact that in fasteners of this kind that are detachable from the button they are liable to be lost and cause considerable inconvenience at a time when they are needed.

My fastener is of simple and inexpensive structure and has many advantages over devices for its purpose as formerly constructed.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

The herein-described button-fastener designed to be securedto the eye of a button prior to its attachment to a garment and consisting of a piece of wire bent to form a sin gle-strand bodkin member 1,- a loop 2 for the button-eye; member 3 extending from said loop and bent upon itself to form an end seat 4 for the button-eye and continued to form an inclined spring-tongue 5 extending across under the loop 2 and having an upwardlycurved terminal end 6 disposed within the loop 2 for the button-eye and bearing against the inner portion of one side thereof, saidv fastener being formed from a single strand of wire, substantially as described.
