DEVICE FOR REMOVING RINGS FROM WELLS- Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. WAGNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at East Bradford, in the county of McKean, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Bemoving Rings from Wells; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to a device for removing rings from wells or the like.

One object of the invention is to rovide an exceedingly simple, inexpensive, urable, and efficient means for attachment to a Valve-stem for the withdrawal of rings from wells or other excavations.

Another object of the invention resides in the provision of a device embodying sprin actuated jaws for cooperation with eac other for the engagement of rings or tubes to readily withdraw the same from a well or other excavation.

With these and other objects in view the present invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings, and articularly pointed out in the appended claims it being understood that changes in the form, pro ortion, size, and minor details ma be ma e within the scope of the claim wit out departing from the s irit or sacrificing any of the advantages of t e invention.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a view, partly in section and partly in elevation, of the valve-stem. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the invention. 3, is a detail view of one of the members. ig. 4 is a detail view of the other member.

Referring now more particularly to the ac companying drawings, the referencecharacter 1 designates a valvestem having a screwthreaded recess 2 in its lower end for the re ception of the screw-threaded end 3 of my device, the said screwthreaded end 3 of the device being fixedly arranged with res ect to the member 4, which is rovided wit a recess 5 at its lower end an in one side thereof to form a shoulder 6, there being a dog 7 pivotall engaged in the said recess 5 and provide with a hooked end 8, designed for movement through the opening 9 at the lower end of the member 4, the said opening 9 communicating with the said recess 5..

A member 10, having a recess 11 in its innor side, is secured by means of suitable screws or rivets 12 to the member 4, the said member 10 having an opening 13 communieating with its recess 11, the said openings 9 and 13 being arranged upon opposite sides of the device. Pivotally secured to the member 10 by means of a suitable pivot-pin 15 1s a dog 14., having a hooked end 16, the said hooked end 16 being designed to. operate through the opening 13 in the second member 10.

The hooks 8 and 16 of the dogs 7 and 14 are designed to normally protrude through the openings 9 and 13 by reason of the fact that the springs 15 and 16 have their ends arranged to bear against the backs of the corresponding dogs. The springs 15 and 16 are therefore disposed upon opposite sides of the device and are secured by means of a screw or rivet to the corresponding side wall of each member, as clearly shown in the drawm s.

From the fore oing it will be readily understood that w en the device is lowered into a barrel or casing of a well or the like the hooked ends 8 and 16 of the dogs will be forced inwardly of the device as soon as they engage the upper edge of a ring or tubing and that as soon as the beveled edges of the dogs have passed the bottom edge of the ring or tubing they, by reason of the aforesaid s rings 15 and 16 spring outwardly, whereby tlie ring or tubing Wlll rest at its bottom upon the shoulders a of the do s and whereby the same may be readily pul ed upwardly of the well in any suitable manner.

What is claimed is A device of the character described comprising oppositely-disposed members secured together, each member having an opening in its lower end, the said openings being disposed opposite to each other, a dog pivotall mounted in each member and provided wit a hooked end for operation through the corresponding openings of the said members, and springs arranged contacting with each member to hold the hooked end thereof normally outwardly through the corresponding opening aforesaid.
