A CORPGEATION OF OKLAHOMA SLIP SOCKET Known fishing tools of the sucker rod type commonly embody one or more slip units, each composed of complement-a1 sections which are held in their cooperative relation,
if at all, by some element which merely acts to prevent displacement of one section relative to another axiallyoi' their support while permitting of their expansion or opening action only incident to movement of the sucker rod passing into the unit.
I have found it advantageous to maintain the slip unit in expanded condition aga nst Y the walls of the socket barrel, asthis insures at all times the maximum opening 01 the slips and proper engagement with the sucker rod or its joint. One of the main OlJjGCtS of the present invention is to provide slip construction embodying novel resilient means which not only serves to maintain the slip threaded sections properly disposed or aligned, but
also tends to expand said sections and cause them to follow the wall of the barrel, in which i move upwardly, a division of my copending application filed March 6, 1929, Serial No. 259,544. I

The invention which forms the subject matter of this application comprises the usual barrel or bowl 1 which is internally at its upper end to receive the oonnector head 2, having a threaded extension by means of which the bead may be. screwed, into the barrel. At its lower en d the bore of tapered and within this tapered seated a slip unit- 3 which is tapered externally to conform to the shape of the barrel taper.
The slip unit isv composed of a plurality of sections to enable it to ex- 7 pand and contract in performing the gripping function incident to the fishing of a sucker rod from a well. To enable it to grip the'rod, the bore of the slip unit is provided with the customary wickers, and while the bore shown in the drawing is formed with parallel walls, it is to beunderstood that Serial No. 259,544 Divided and this application filed May 2" clearly in F 2 of fold said bore may he formed with a taper, as conventional in this art, so as to enable it to take different sized rods or to catch a rod which may be broken adjacent to the joint or box.
At the top of the bore the slip unit is formed with an internal groove to receive an expander memberor spring ring l, shown the drawings. This ring by virtue of being seated in the groove is naturally interlocked with the slip unit against displacement by an object which may. pass into and through the bore of the slip unit. The object of this spring is two in the first place, it is designed to prevent longitudinal displacement of one oi the slip sections relative to the other, and,
in the second place, the ring by virtue of its expansion characteristics tends to cause the follow the wall of the barrel slip sections to or bowl when it is moved upwardly in the latter during the fishing operation. As shown in Fig. 2,the ring; is made of flat steel and the ends thereof overlap suiiiciently to insure a closed ring when the slip sections are expanded to the fullest extent.
In the use of this sucker rod socket, itis lowered into the well casing until it con tacts with the catch or the sucker rod. Having thus described my invention, which I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United. Statesis:

A sucker rod socket comprising a barrel, a slip unit mounted therein and composed of complemental gripping sections, and separate means common to and interlocking with said sections and tending to expanel the sections into contact With the barrel Walls with movement of the slip unit upwardly within the barrel and preventing longitudinal displacement of the sections relative to each other.

A sucker rod socket comprising a barrel, a slip unit mounted therein and composed of complemental sections, said unit having inner annular groove extending continuously irorn one section to another, and an expander member mounted in said groove permitting free opening and closing movements of the sections.
