To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HORRIS V; TODD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Drumright, in the county of Greek and State of Oklahoma, have invented new and useful Improvements in Rod Sockets, of which the following is aspecification.
This invention relrtes to oil well devices and has for its object the provision of a novel socket for use in connection with sucker rods, the socketbeing formed of relatively longitudinally movable interengaging sections or sleeves normally held in association but capable of movement out of engaging position for subsequent springing to eifect'disengagement of the rod therefrom. f
An important object is the provision of a device of this character which will have strength as its main feature, the socket having greater thickness than ordinary sockets and having such a positive interlocking action of its sections as to positively prevent accidental springing or other separation which might cause dropping of'the sucker rod.
An additional object is the provision of a device of this character which will be simple and inexpensive in manufacture, highly eliicient in use, durable in service, and a general improvement in the art.

Secured within the lower end of this body is a substantially semi-circular seat 22 having a beveled'lower edge 23 and secured above this seat is a slip 24L which is arcuate in form and which has a beveled upper edge 25 Designed for co-operation with the above "described parts, is a substantially semi-cylindrical body 26 which, together with the forms a cylindrical tube and at its upper endthis body 26 is formed with a suitable sleeve 27 adapted for engagement over and about the member '10 and designed to have its lower edge engaged against the upper edgexof the body 19. At its lower end the body 26 is cut away, as shown at 28, and at such cut-away portion is formed with undercut shoulders 29 designed to conformingly engage with the shoulders 21. Secured wi hin the lower end' of this body 26 is a seat 30 complementary to the seat 22 and having a similarly beveled lower end 31. Disposed above the seat 30 is a slip 32 which has its lower end resting upon the upperend of the seat 30 and which is hingedly mounted by means of rivets 83 which pass through the wall of the member 26 and which are secu-redto a small plate 34 fitting loosely within a recess 35 in thewall of the member 26. The outer face of this slip and'the inner surface of the wall of the member 26 are recessed as indicated at 36 for the retention of a coiled spring 37 which normally urges the slip inwardly. y
In the assembling of theparta -the sucker portion 27 slidably engaging over the meme ber 10. The body 26 is then slid downwardly until the shoulders 29 thereon engage the shoulder 21 at which time the slips 24c and 32 will be complementary to eachother and will form an inwardly extending flange adapted to be engaged by the enlargement C on the sucker rod. hen the parts are moved into this position the sleeve 27 will slide over the lowermost pin 16, the pin automatically retracting owing to the fact that its outer end is beveled as shown at 17. When the shoulders 21 and 29 are in con forming engagement the sleeve 27 will have passed downwardly beyond the lowermost pin 16 whereupon the pin will spring outwardly and engage over the upper edge of the sleeve 27 and prevent upward longitudinal movement of the body 26, with respect to the body 19. Initially this pin holds the lower edge of the sleeve 27 for preventing downward movement of the-sleeve and body 26 until such movement is desired. T'lhe provision of the spring 37 is an important feature as it urges the slip inwardly so'that it will have a sort of ratchet action to prevent the sucker rod from being pulleddownwardly while permitting it to' he slid freely upwardly with respect to the body 26 and member 19. a
In Figure 6 I have shown an auxiliary sleeve 35 designed to constrict the bore of the mating substantially semi-cylindrical members in case there is a break in the sucker rod at its smaller portion.
From the foregoing description and a study of the drawings it will be apparent that I have thus provided a simply constructed and easily assembled socket device which will be of manifest utility and advantage and which may be very quickly and easily associated with a sucker rod.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is of course to beunderstood that I reserve the right to make such changes in the form,
body secured thereto and having its lower end formed with circumferential extensions formed at their upper edges withrundercut shoulders, a second substantially semi-cylindrical hollow body associated with said first named body and having its upper end formed as a sleeve slidably engageable over said upper member and having its lower end cut away circumferentially and formed with undercut shoulders conformingly engaging said first named shoulders, and mating into said upper member and having its lower end circumferentially prolonged and formed with undercut shoulders, a second substantially semi-cylindrical hollowbody having its upper end formed as a sleeve slidably engageable about said: upper member and having its lower end cut away circumferentially and formed with undercut shoulders conformingly engaging said first named shoulders, seats within the lower ends of the body matingly cooperating, and slips secured within said lower ends of the bodies immediately above said'seats.

In combination with'a suckerrod having an enlargement, a socket device comprising a solid upper member adapted for connection with other members disposed thereabove within the well, a depending substan tially semi-cylindrical hollow body secured to said upper member and having its lower end circumferentially prolonged and formed with undercut shoulders, a second substantially semi-cylindrical hollow body having its upper end formed as a sleeve slidably engageable about said uppermember and hav ing its lower end cut away circumferentially and formed with undercut shoulders conformingly engaging said first named shoulders, seats within the lower ends of the body matingly cooperating, and slips secured diately above said seats, the upper edges of said slips being outwardly and downwardly beveled, one slip being hingedly mounted and spring pressed toward the other, I w
