This invention relates to new and useful improvements in a pipe puller.
One object of the invention is to provide a pipe puller of the spear type adapted to be inserted into a pipe stuck in a well bore, and
engaged therewith, and through which the stuck pipe may be pulled from the bore.
Another object of the invention is to provide a pipe puller of the character described having a cylindrical body and pipe engaging jaws associated therewith and means operable by fluid pressure to secure the jaws into engaging relation with the pipe to be pulled; said device embodying also means for automatically releasing the jaws from the stuck pipe to the end that the puller may be disengaged from the pipe in case the pipe can not be dislodged.
l/Vith the above and other objects in- View, this invention has particular relation to certain novel features of construction, operation and arrangement of parts, an example of which is given in this specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein Figure 1 shows a vertical sectional view of the pipe puller.
Figure 2 shows a cross sectional view taken on the line 22 of Figure 1, and
Figure 3 shows a fragmentary side elevation thereof.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings wherein like numerals of reference designate similar parts in each of the figures, the numeral 1 designates the pipe to be pulled and the numeral 2 refers to a tubular cutter body attached to the lower end of the operating string 3. The cutter body 2 has the cylinder body 4; therein in which there is the reciprocable plunger 5 whose upper end has the cup rings as 6 thereon. Screwed onto the lower end of the cutter body there is guide point 7 located in which is a coil spring 8 on which the plunger is mounted. An axial water channel 9 leads through the plunger,'from end to end, and the guide point 7 has an outlet water channel 10 through which the water may pass from the operating string to wash out the stuck pipe. The body 2 has 1930. Serial No. 468,870.
dowiiwardly flared plane faces 11 against which the pipe engaging jaws 12 ride. The outer surfaces of these jawsare arcuate in cross section and are toothed to engage the pipe to be pulled. Guide rods 13 have their upper ends attached to the body 2 and these guide rods diverge downwardly and their lower ends abut the upper end of the guide point. The jaws 12 have the longitudinal bearings through which the respective guide rods 13 pass, said jaws being slidable on said rods. The inner side of each jaw 12 has a lengthwise tenon as 14 which moves in a corresponding groove 15 in the adjacent face 11 of the body, and these respective tenons l4 are'seated snugly in corresponding mortises 16 in the plunger 5.
In operation the device is assembled as shown and let down into the pipe to be pulled. While being let down the plunger will be held in elevated position by the spring 8 and the jaws 12 will be withdrawn from contact with the pipe 1. When the tool has been so lowered fluid under pressure may be forced, by asuitable pump at the ground surface, down through the string 3 against the plunger 5 and said plunger will be thereby forced downwardly compressing the spring 8 and carrying the aws 12 downwardly with it and outwardly into engagement with the pipe 1. An'upward pull may then be exerted through the string 3 by suitable apparatus at the ground surface provided for the purpose and the jaws 12 will be wedged, by the sloping faces 11, into engagement with the pipe to be pulled. A further upward pull will usually result in the dislodgment of the stuck pipe. If said pipe cannot be pulled the string 8 and body 2. may be slightly lowered to release the aws and the spring 8 will then operate. to force the plunger and jaws upwardly relative to the body 2 and the jaws will move inwardlyralongv the rods 13 and be thus carried out of engagement with the pipe 1 and the pulling tool may then be withdrawn from the bore.
While I have shown what I now consider to be the preferred form of the invention it is obvious that mechanical changes may be made therein and equivalents substituted for the parts shown, and I reserve the right to make such changes and substitutions as may be found desirable within the principle of the invention.
\Vhat I claim is 1. A pipe puller including a cylinder having an external face, which is downwardly and outwardly inclined, a pipe engaging jaw slidable on said face, a plunger in the cylinder operatively connected with said jaw, a
guide point attached to the lower end of the cylinder, a spring in said guide point on which the plunger is mounted, and a guide rod on which said aw is mounted to slide.
2. A pipe puller including a cylinder having an external face, which is downwardly and outwardly inclined, a pipe engaging aw slidable on said face, a plunger in the cylinder operatively connected with said jaw, a guide point on the lower end of the cylinder, and a yieldable seat enclosed by said guide point and on which the plunger is sustained. 3. A pipe puller including a cylindrical body having downwardly flared external faces, jaws on said faces, a plunger in the cylinder operatively connected with said jaws, said plunger and jaws being provided, one with lengthwise mortises and the other with lengthwise tenons which fit into said mortises, means for applying pressure fluid to said plunger to actuate it in one direction, means normally tending to move the plunger in the other direction and upwardly converging guide rods on which the jaws move.

A pipe puller including a cylinder having external downwardly flared faces, pipe engaging jaws on said faces, a plunger in the cylinder operatively connected with said jaws, a guide point on the cylinder a yieldable member housed in the guide point and adaptedto actuate the plunger in one direction and effective to withdraw the aws from the pipe to be pulled, means for applying pressure fluid to the plunger to move it in the other direction to move the jaws into engagement with the pipe to be pulled.
5. A pipe puller including a cylinder having external downwardly flared faces, a housing on the lower end of the cylinder, a spring in said housing, pipe engaging jaws on said faces, a plunger in the cylinder in said spring and operative in one direction and effective to withdraw the jaws from the pipe to be pulled, means for applying pressure fluid to the plunger to moveit in the other direction to move the jaws into engagement with the pipe to be pulled, and guide rods on which the aws are movable.
