The supply of air and steam to draft-pipe l1 is governed by the suction of the engine, the suction controlling the movement of a diaphragm in chamber 43, connected by a pipe 44 with suctionpipe 28. Connected wlth the diaphragm is a rod 45, pivotally connected at its other end with a walkingbeam 46,one end of which is connected b a rod 47 with throttle-valve 39 and the ot er by a rod 48 with damper 42. As the suction of the en e increases rod 45 will be moved to the rig t, causing the walking-beam 46 tol close steam-valve 39 and open aindamper 421, increasin the supply `of air to the fire and causing t e same to grow hotter and produce more gas. As the suction of the engine decreases rod 45 will be moved to the left, closing damper 42 and opening steam-valve 39 increasingthe supply of steam under the grate of the combustion-chamber and causing the tire to diminish, and it will be observed that this mechanism at all times controls the proportion of air and steam to draft-pipe 11, and thereb regulates he intensity of the fire to suit t e operation of the engine, and while I illustrate a dia )hragmchamber as the automatic means do. not wish to be restricted to this specific device.
A. great many slight changes might be made in the general form and arrangement of described without departing from my invention, and hence I do not restrict myself to the precise details set forth, but consider myself atliberty to make such slight changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of my invention.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. ln a gasproducer, the combination of a casing, a combustion-chamber, a cooler, a scrubber, and a purifier-chamber all in said casing, and means connecting the same.
2. in a gas-producer, the combination of a casing, acombustion-chamber in one end thereof, a cooler adjacent to the combustionchamber and in said casing, and scrubber and purifier chambers in the other end of said casing separated by a vertical partition, means for connecting the combustion-chamber with the cooler, means for connecting the scrubber and purifier with each other and means for connectingr the cooler and scrubber.
3. ln a gasproducer, the combination with a casing, of a combustion-chaluber in Said casing, a cooler-in said casing communicating with the combustion chamber, a water-seal ash-pit for said combusthx1-chamber, and a water-seal tar-receiving pan at the bottom of said cooler extending out beyond the casing to permit the removal of tar without disturbingr thc operation of the apparatus.
4. in a gas-producer, the combination with a combustion-chamber, a as-cooler, and a )ur-itier, of a water-tank or oiler in the combustion-chamber, a draft-pipc communicating with the bottom of said combustionchamber,`an air-darn er for said pipe, a pipe for directin steam om the boiler or tank into the dra t-pipe, a valve in the steam ipe, and means controlled by the suction o gas from the purifier and connected with the damper ofthe draft-pipe and the valve ofthe steam-pipe for'regulating the pro ortions of air and steam supplied to said dra t-pipe.
5. The combination with a gas-producer,` a grate in the combustion-chamber thereof, and a water tank or boiler in said combustion-chamber, of a draft-pipe communicating with the space beneath the grate, an airdamper at one end thereof, a ipe conveying steam from the boiler or tani to said draftpipe, a valve in said steam-pipe, and automatic means controlled by the pressure of the gas issuing from the apparatus, for overning the operation of sai valve and amper, to regulate the roportion of air and steam admitted to saidpdraft-pipe.
6. The combination with a gas-producer, a grate in the combustion-chamber thereof, and a water tank or boiler around said combastion-chamber, of a draft ipe communicating with the space beneat the ate, an air-damper at one end of said dra t-pipe, a pipc conveying steam from the tank or boiler to the (.lraft-pipe,` a valve in said steam-pipe, and automatic means controlling the operation of the damper and valve.
7. The combination with a gas-producer, and a water tank or boiler in its combustionchamber, a draft-pi e communicating with the space beneath t 1e combustion-chamber, an aindamper at one end thereof, a pipe conveying steam from the tank or boiler to said draft-pipe, a valve in said steampipe a diaphragm whose movement is controlled by the suction of gas from the apparatus, a walking-beam connected with the valve and damper, and a rod connecting said walkingbeam with the dia uhragm.
