.To WHoM rr MAY oo'NonRN;
Be it known that I,` BENJAMIN PORTER, of Jackson, in the county of Jackson,land State of-Michigan, have invented a. new land useful Improvement in Brick-Mould Safety-Guards; and do declare that the following is a true and accuratedescription thereof, reference being had to lthe accompanying drawings, and tothe letters of reference marked thereon, and being apart of this spcication.
' Figure l'is a front view, with one door open. I 4
Figure 2 is a sectional transverse viewA of the same from x toux. Figure 3 is a bottom view of the same. Like letters indicate like .parts in each figure. The nature of .this invention consists in' providing the front faces ot' jack-moulds forjbrick-machines with proper doors and springs, acting as safety-guards forthe brick-moulds.
It is a \vell-known fact that in the manufacture of brick, stones or other obstacles often get into the moulds,
and in removing the same, considerable time is lost, and the liability of losing theentire set of brick. To obviatethese disadvantages, I construct and attach to` frame Aat the bottom, theordinary metallic jackmoulds B, the front` faces of which are provided with suitable doors G, the same being kept closed by springs D and braces E. Should vanyobstacle have been pressed into the portable moulds,`that projects above the upper face'of the same, itis removed by the forward motion given said moulds in making room forothers, by
bringing the obstacle against the respective door in front, which same rises, allowing the obstacle to pass out,
immediately iiying back to place-,after the passing outof said obstruction, bythe action of the respective spring and brace on the same, as shown in iig. 2. r g
Having thus described the nature of' my invention, I will now proceed to describe andname its various parts, so thatthose skilled in the art can manufacture the same. A is .a'box or frame,and connected thereto at the bottom by arms F are the jack-moulds D, the front faces of which -are provided Ywith hinged `doorsC- opening at the bottoni. D are springs, rigidly attached at their tops to the front of box A, and provided at their lower ends with braces E, connected to the springs by hingejoints HQ Doors C are kept in proper position by the action of springs D upon braces E, the lower ends oi' which. work freely in the respective recesses G, provided for the same in the front of doors C, as shown in iig. 2, I do .inot claim broadly any kind of hinge, such as patented by William B. Barnard, April 9, 1850, as I coniine my invention strictly to safety-guards of brick-moulds, on the operation of which my invention is an "improvement, and to such only does my claim refer.
-What I claim as my invention, and desire vto secure by Letters Patent, is-
The springs D, when provided with hinge-joints H and braces E, whichilatter move in thc recesses G oi' doors C, all operating and arranged substantially as described and for the purposes sc t forth. l BENJ. PORTER.
