City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented newv and useful Improvements in'Fence-Posts, of which the fol- My invention relates to improvements in fence-posts.
One obj ect of my invention is to provide a fencepost of cementitious material having embedded therein a novel reinforcing-frame, the Whole forming a post whichis cheaply constructed, of great strength, and which will withstand the elements.
My inventionvprovides, further, a fencepost having a longitudinal groove adapted to receive therein vertically adjustable fence- Wire-engaging devices constructed in a manner such that they may be readily mounted inl the groove of the fence-post and firmly secured g to the fence-wires.
Myinvention provides, further, a fence post having va longitudinal groove in one side and a plurality of vertically-adjustable wireengaging devices mounted in the grooveof the post, said groove being dovetail in vshape andthe wire-engaging devices being each formed of sheet metaltted to said groove,

To attach the fence-wires 3 to thel devices 14, the following-described operation is performed: Each device 14, having the form 2 5 shown in Fig. 4, is inserted in the groove 2 in the position occupied by the Vupper of ysaid devices shown in Fig. 5. The device is then turned first to the position occupied by the middle device in Fig. 5 and then to the posi- 3o tion occupied by the lowest of the devices 14 `in Fig. 5, which position corresponds to that shown in Fig. 4. The rear portion of the device is then flattened, as shown in Fig. 6, thus forcing the shoulders 17 into the longitudinal v3 5 recesses 13 and forcing the arms 15 against the side walls of the groove 2. 'When so formed, the device 14 will be firmly retained in the dovetail groove of the post. The adjacent fence-wire 3 is then slipped into the 4o nbtchesv 16, after which those portions of the arms outside-the recesses 16 are folded toward each other and then rearwardly across the fence-wire, as shown in Fig. 3 and Fig. 6, thus securely affixing the fence-wire to the Itis obvious that rior to the iiattening of the rear portion o the device said device may be adjusted longitudinally inthe groove 2 to the position deslred. Opposite sides of the fence-post 1 in the portion thereof 5o adapted to be buried in the ground are provided with recesses 18, which when Ithe post is set has the adjacent earth packed therein, Athus more securely holding the postcrin the ground. For the purpose of lightening the 5'5 post the side opposite the groove 2-may be provided .with longitudinal recesses 19.
If it is desired, insteadof'y using wires as the longitudinal members of the fence, to ernploy boards forsuch` purpose, the devices 14 6o are ,dispensed with and a vertical dovetail wooden strip 2Oy is'iitted in the groove 2, as shown in Figs. 7 yand 9. Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination with a cementitious fenceost having a longitudinal groove in one si e, the groove being dovetail shape, of a plurality of metal fence-wire-engaging devices longitudinally adjustable in s'aid groove,
metal fitting said groove and provided each with two arms extending beyond the face of the post, said arms having each in one edge beyond the faceof the ost a notch adapted to receive therein the ence-wire, said arms being foldab'le toward each other and foldable inwardly across -the fence-wire embraced thereby.
2. The combination with a cementitious fence-post having in one side a longitudinal .groove of dovetail shape, said groove having two longitudinal recesses disposed respectively where the. side walls intersect the rear wall of the groove, of a plurality of fencewire engaging devices mounted in said groove, each of said devices being composed .of sheet metal and provided each with afor wardly-curved rear' portion adapted to bel flattened and when flattened entering said recesses respectively, each device having two arms projecting beyond the face ofthe post,-
each arm'having in one edfre anotch adapted to receive the fence-wire, the arms of each device forward of said notches lbeing foldable toward each-other and across the fence-wire.
3.
