. DECORATIVE PROCESS- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 27, 1906.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, ADoLPH KUMMEROW, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Two Rivers, in the county of Manitowoc and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Decorative Processes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention consists in the process hereinafter described with reference to the accompanying drawings and subsequently claimed, its object being to improve enamel finilsh of metal, wood, or other opaque materia Figure 1 of the drawings represents a plan view of a strip of enamel-finish opaque material decorated in accordance with my invention, and Fig. 2 a longitudinal vertical section of the same.
The process consists in the application in the usual manner of any color or tint of paint enamel to the opaque surface to be decorated, then smoking the enamel, while moist, with the flame of a candle, lamp, torch, or other suitable burner, and finally drying the smoked enamel in any suitable manner. The deposition of soot or lampblack from the flame and its c'ommingling with the moist enamel results in pleasing effects of indefinite variety, dependent upon the manipulation of the ignited burner or the device to be decorated,
or both, while in juxtaposition. The multiplicity of shades and tints upon the surface treated are permanently fixed by the drying of said enamel,
My process is of particular value in the finishing of various small articles of manufacture and of panels, plates, and other devices for decorative purposes.
Referring by letter to the drawings, A indicates a strip of opaque material provided with a coating B of smoked enamel, having lampblack or soot C deposited thereon in the manner above specified, the enamel being dried on said strip to permanently fix the mulitplicity of shades and tints obtained upon the surface treated.
I claim A process of decoration that consists in the application of paint enamel to an opaque surface, smoking the enamel, while moist, with the flame of a candle, lamp, torch or other suitable burner and finally drying the smoked enamel. 1
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand, at Two Rivers, in the county of Manitowoc and State of Wisconsin, in the presence of two witnesses.
ADOLPH KUMMEROW.
