BAG-FASTENER- Specification of Letters Patent.

Be it known that I, JOHN S. WILLIAMSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Elizabethtown, in the county of Bladen, State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bag-Fasteners and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to fasteners, and more particularly to bag-fasteners, and has for its object to provide a cheap and efficient fastener with which a bag may be securely fastened with a maximum of matter therewithin.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following specification, which describes an embodiment of the present invention.
In the drawings forming a portion of this specification, and in which like characters of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, Figure 1 is a view of the end of a bag provided with the present invention. Fig. 2 is a view of the fastener. Fig. 3 is a sectional view of a portion of a bag at one end of the fastener, the confining portion of the latter being illustrated. Fig. 4 is a view showing the point end of the fastener bent for final engagement in the bag. Fig. 5 is a view of the fastener in its final position but removed from the bag.
Referring now to the drawings, the present invention comprises a wire 6,having a pointed end 7 and having its opposite end portion bent at an acute angle to the remainder thereof, as shown at 8, and then at an acute angle to the portion 8 in the direction of the main portion of the wire, as shown at 9, the free extremity of the portion 9 being also sharpened, as shown at 10. In placing the fastener in position the sides of a bag A are brought to gether and the pointed end 7 of the wire is inserted therethrough at one extremity of the open end of the bag. The wire is then passed over the free edges of the sides of the bag and is again passed through the sides in the same direction as that in which it was initially passed through, and this operation is repeated until the free edges of the bag have been secured together throughout their entire lengths. The bag then lies at one extremity of its open end in the angle formed by the portion 8 and the main portion of the Wire, and the portion 8 is then bent bodily toward the bag to cause the point 10 to pass through the sides of the latter and to bring the portion 8 against the bag, after which the portion 9 is bent bodily to lie against the op posite side of the bag from the portion 8. The fastener is of a length to project some distance beyond the bag at its point 7, and after the fastener has been placed in operative position the portion adjacent to the point 7 is bent rearwardly at an acute angle, as shown at 8, and then inwardly toward the bag, as shown at 9, after which these portions are bent in the manner described in connection with the portions 8 and 9, the portion 8 finally lying against the opposite side of the bag from the portion 8 and the portion .9 lying parallel to the portion 8 and against the bag at the opposite side thereof from this last-named portion.
What is claimed is 1. A bag-fastener comprising a wire having a pointed end and havingits opposite end portion bent to form a portion extending at an acute angle to the main portion, the free end of this said angular portion being bent inwardly at an acute angle to the remainder of said angular portion and having its free extremity sharpened.
2. The combination with a bag, of a fastener therefor comprising a wire engaged through the sides of the bag and then over the free edges thereof and then through the bag throughout the entire width of the latter, the end portions of the wire being bent toward each other at opposite sides of the bag and then being passed through the bag, the extremities of said end portions being bent away from each other against the bag and lyin at opposite sides thereof.
