Be it known that I, HERMAN E. MosnLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rockymount, in the county ofFranklin and State of Virginia, have invented a new and useful Sack-Filler, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to sack-hllers.

One object of the invention is to provide a iiller which in use will operate to maintain a bag or sack in upright position, thereby leaving the operators hands free to supply the material to the filling-funnel.

A further object is to provide a sack-filler which may be adjusted to any desired height and remain in such adjustment.

A further object is to provide a sack-filler embodying in its construction a cover which will constitute a counterbalance to hold the funnel in any desired position,

With the above and other objects in view, as will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction and combination of parts of a sack-filler, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and in which like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts, there is illustrated one form of em-l bodiment of the invention capable of carrying the same into practical operation, it being understood that the elements therein exhibited may be varied or changed as to shape, proportion, and exact manner of assemblage Without departing from the spirit thereof.

The device embodies a funnel 1, of the kind generally employed in iilling sacks, a cover 2, and a swiveled bracket or hanger 3, provided with two sheaves 4, around which pass suspending elements in the nature of cords or chains 5, one end of each of which is secured to the cover and the other end of each to the funnel. As herein shown, the connection between the suspending elements 5 is secured by means of hooks 6 and 7 arranged, respectively, at or adjacent to the rim of the funnel and at or adjacent to the rim of the cover, and by the provision of these hooks the suspending elements may be readily detached from the parts in order to permit removal for the purpose of cleansing or for any other reason.

The cover may be made m any preferred design, and its weight will equal that of the funnel, so that the latter will be counterbalanced and will remain at any adjustment to which it is moved. Of course there will be a tendency for the funnel to overweight the cover when the former is moved downward to bring its spout 8 into the mouth of a bag or when moved to the position shown in Fig. 1, this being due to the fact that the weight of the increased length of the outer leads of the chains would be added to that of the funnel. This overbalancing is prevented, however, by the employment of the grooved sheaves, the bite or frictional contact between. the walls of the grooves of which and the chains being suflicient to counteract any tendency on the part of the funnel when moved to its lowest position to overbalance the cover. The cover is designed to 'Iit snugly within the mouth of the funnel, and thus preclude entrance of extraneous matter from above, and as the funnel will be dark when the cover is in position flies or other insects will not be apt to enter through its spout S.

'Ihe bracket 3 may be of any preferred construction and is provided with an eye 9 to engage an overheadv hook or support 10, which will be secured in the ceiling of a room and over the scale S, which may be of any preferred construction, such as a platform or a computing scale.

In the use of the filler the sack will be placedv upon the platform of the scale or in the pan thereof and the funnel will be lowered until the spout enters the mouth of the bag, thereby holding the latter in vertical position. The operator then pours the material through the mouth of the funnel in the usual manner. Owing to the fact that the funnel will be held at its initial adjustment there will be no possibility of a merchant giving short weight by weighing the funnel, as the latter will be free from contact with the bag, and the bag as the material is supplied to it will move away from the funnel. r.This is a feature of importance, inasmuch as if the funnel were not co'unterbalanced an unscrupulous merchant could give dishonest weight by allowing the weight of the funnel to be added to that of the material supplied to the bag.

cheaply made, and in use Will be found of the highest efficiency for the purpose designed, as it will effect a savinfr of time and will prevent Waste in filling sacllis and smallpackages With such materials as sugar, Hour, coffee, and the like. When not in use, the funnel is pushed up, thereby causing the cover to seat itself, and thus keep the funnel in clean and sanitary condition.

Having thus described the invention, What is claimed is- 1. A sack-filler embodying a suspended funnel, and a cover constituting a counterbalance.

2. A sack-fillerembodying a funnel, a cover constituting a counterbalance, and suspending elements detachably connected with the funnel Vand the cover.

3. A sack-filler embodying a funnel, a cover therefor, constituting a counterbalance, an overhead support carrying sheaves, and flexible suspending elements engaging the sheaves and having their terminals connected respectively to the funnel and to the cover.

4. A sack-filler comprising a funnel provided With hooks, a cover therefor constitute ing a counterbalance and provided With hooks, and suspending elements having their terminals in engagement With the hooks.
