Be itknown that I, \VILLIAM HENRY STONE, J12, a citizen of the United States, residing at South Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bag Holders and Fillers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in store service appliances, and more particularly to a hopper-like receptacle or funnel designed to expeditiously and reliably introduce various kinds of merchandise into paper bags without liability of spilling any portion thereof.

The object of my invention, among others, is to provide a swinging funnel or hopperlike receptacle as above set forth, open at the bottom and top and normally elevated above the counter or platform and movably suspended upon its support, whereby the end of the receptacle may be easily moved to the right or left to enter the open mouth of a paper bag or the like and then swing back into its normal vertical position, enablingsaid bag to be easily filled to the desired extent.

A further object of my invention is to provide means for accurately measuring the contents to be introduced without the necessity of any special measuring vessel to be used for this purpose, thereby enabling the contents to be introduced into the bag in any preferred way, as from the hands of the operator.

Other objects and advantages will be hereinafter made clearly apparent in the following specification, considered in connection with the accompanying drawings, which are made a part of this application, and in which-- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invention as applied to use with the measuring device removed. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section of my invention, showing one form of measuring appliance whereby the quantity of produce introduced into the receptacle may be easily determined and measured; and Fig. 3 is a similar view showing my preferred form of measuring appliance attached thereto.

In order to conveniently refer to the various details of my invention and accessories deemed necessary to illustrate a practical application thereof to use, numerals will be employed, the same numeral applying to a similar part throughout the several views.

Referring to the numerals on the drawings, 1 indicates a platform of any preferred character, size, or shape, while 2 indicatesa standard rigidly attached to said platform and extending upward a proper distance to afford a seat for the shaft 3, which is rigidly attached to or forms an integral part of the collar-sec tion 4, within which collar is loosely or removably disposed the funnel or hopper section 5, having at its upper end a flared terminal or hopper section proper, 6, in order to facilitate the introduction of merchandise of various kinds. I also attach to the upper end of the standard, as by the bolts or rivets 7, the supporting-bracket 8, though said bracket may, if preferred, form an integral part or extension of the standard 2. It will be observed by reference to the drawings that the supporting shaft or bolt carried by the collar 4 is thus reliably supported by extending through an aperture provided-in the bracket 8 and in the upper end of the standard 2. thus permitting the collar 4- to freely turn by reason of its connection with said shaft and allow the hopper-section to be swung freely to the right or left to enable the lower end thereof to be introduced into a paper bag 9 or other receptacle, as clearly shown in Fig. 1.

'If preferred, the lower end of the section 5 may extend downward almost in contact with the platform 1, thereby relieving the paper bag of all strain incident to the introduction of potatoes or similar merchandise into the sack through the funnel or hopper section.

At some point in the upper edge of the ring 4 I provide a hole or socket 12, preferably immediately above the bolt 3, into which takes a'dowel 13, formed integral with the arm 10, so that when it is desired to remove the funnel from the ring 4 the arm 10 may be quickly and easily removed from the ring and out of the way of the funnel.

The upper end M of the arm 10 is bent at right angles to the body portion thereof and is provided with a socket 15, through which a graduated standard 11 passes. The said standard is adapted to extend down to any point within the receptacle 5, said graduations upon the standard being of such a character that the operator will understand that if he fills the receptacle to the height or point of the lower end of the graduated standard 11 he will have placed therein a definite known quantity, determined by the graduation on the standard registering With one edge of the socket 15. In order to hold the standard at any point to which it may be adjusted, I have provided a set-screw which enters a suitable orifice in the socket 15.

In Fig. 2 of the drawings I have shown a simple form of grad uations wherein the graduations are disposed upon the inner side of the receptacle 5. By this means it will require but a glance within the receptacle to determine to what height the contents must reach in order that the required quantity shall be therein disposed.

It will be understood that the various parts of my invention may be very cheaply and expeditiously manufactured and readily assembled, each in its respective operative position. It will also be understood that my invention may be made of any preferred material and of any desired size deemed necessary for meeting all the requirements of such an appliance, and while I have described in this application the preferred form of construction which may be adopted I wish to comprehend all possible substitutes and equivalen ts which may be considered as falling fairly within the scope of my invention.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. An apparatus of the character specified comprising a suitable base 1; a standard 2 rigidly secured to said base; an arm 8 having a bent-up portion at its free end, carried at or near the upper end of said standard; registering orifices in the said standard 2, and

bent-up portion; a collar having an outwardlyextending rod 3 adapted to find a bearing in the registering orifices and thereby swivelly disposing said collar 4; a nut adapted to retain the said rod in place, in combination with a funnel proper havinga flaring upper end and an open lower end, designed to be received by said collar whereby the funnel may be tilted or inclined in either direction to permit the lower end to enter a sack or other receptacle as and for the purpose-set forth.

2. In an apparatus of the class specified, the combination of the funnel proper With a supporting-ring i, said ring having a socket 12 in its upper edge; an arm 10 having a dowel 13 adapted to lit the said socket; a socket 15 at the upper end of said arm 10; a graduated standard adapted to take loosely into said socket and means carried by said arm 10 to adjust the standard 11, substantially as set forth.

3. An apparatus comprising a suitable base, a standard secured to said base; an arm 8 car ried by said standard, said arm having its free end bent up at right angles to the body portion, said standard and said bent-up portion having registering apertures; a collar 1 having an outwardly-extending rod 3 adapted to take into said apertures, and a nut adapted to hold said rod in place, in combination with a funnel proper having a flaring upper end and an open lower end designed to be received by the said collar, and means carried by the collar adapted to accurately determine the quantity of contents of said funnel, said means comprising the bracket 10 having a pin at its lower end adapted to take into an orifice in the ring 4, and a graduated standard 11 carried by said bracket, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
