WlNlDOW-SASH HOLDER.
Specicaton of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 30, 1906.
Application filed .Tune 28, 1905. Serial No. 267,415.
T0 @ZZ whom, t may concern:
Be it known that I, ELMER A. HYDE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Villisca, in the county of Montgomery and State of Iowa, have inventedv certain new and useful Improvements in Window-Sash Holders; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The present invention has reference to that class of window-sash holders in which. are employed two cams adapted to bear against the window-frame to hold the sash in a raised. or lowered position and the object of the invention is to provide a simple and effective means for operating the cams whereby a perfect action of the parts is obtained and the cams rendered. effective.
rIhe invention consists in a window-sash holder constructed substantially as shown in the drawings and hereinafter described and claimed.
Figure 1 of the drawings is aside elevation, partly in section, showing the device applied to the window-sash and the cams bearing against the window-frame; Fig. 2, a detail view in perspective, showing one of the cams and its connections.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents a portion of a window-sash, and B indicates the frame against which the cams bear, said cams being represented at C, and, if desired, may have a roughened or other holding surface, as indicated. at a.
The cams C are suitably pivoted 'at l) to a casing D, set into a mortise in the window sash and having flanges c, through which screws d or other like fastenings extend and enter the wood of the sash to hold the casing in place.
The casing D has a tubular extension e, through which passes a pull-rod E, provided at its outer end with a knob f for operating it, said rod having a bifurcated head g at its inner end F, with which engage the inner ends of curved levers and are pivoted thereto in any suitable manner found most preferable.
The levers F are not integral, but are separate and independent of each other and are pivoted together and to the bifurcated head g, as shown in dotted lines of Fig. 1 of the drawings, the pivoted connections of the levers being shown as concealed by the bifurcated head in Fig. 2 of the drawings, and consequently the levers would not appear as being separate.
The two cams C have bifurcated ends h of sufficient length to allow of the free action of the levers and of the cams, and the rod E is spring-actuated through the medium of the coiled spring Gr, which encircles the rod, its respective ends bearing against the bifurcated head of the rod and the flange i of the tubular extension e, as shown in Fig. l of the drawings. l
The curved levers F as an intermediate means of forming a pivoted connection between the cams C and end of the pull-rod E provides aperfect and effective aswell as asiinple means of operating the cams when it is desired to release them from engagement with the window-frame when it is desired to raise or lower the sash, and when adjusted in height or closed the spring G upon the pull-rod when said rod is released will force the cams in engagement with the frame of the window and hold it open or closed, and when the sash is closedv the device will form a lock therefor.
It is evident that many changes or modilications in the details of construction may be resorted to without in any manner departing from the essential features of the invention.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A window-sash holder comprising a casing seated in a mortise in the sash and having a tubular extension, cams pivoted to the cas ing and having bifurcated ends, a pull-rod having its bearing in the tubular extension of the casing, a coiled spring encircling the rod to render it spring-actuated, a bifurcated head upon the inner end of the rod, and curved levers engaging the bifurcations in the cams and the bifurcation in the head and pivoted thereto, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I a'llix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ELMER A. HYDE.
Witnesses:
E. Y. Rien, S. H. COLEMAN.
