(No Model.)
L. ABBOTT. MEANS FOR OPERATING LOCK HINGES.
WITNESSES- @9/9W. QOMAJAW,
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEicE.
LEVI ABBOTT, OF ARLINGTON, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-THIRD TO A. G. MINTON, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
MEANS FOR OPERATING LOCK-HINGES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 465,810, dated December 22, 1891.
Application filed March 9, 1891. Serial No. 384,228. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LEVI ABBOTT, of Arlington, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Means for Operating Lock-Hinges, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has relation to that class of lock-hinges in which one member is con- IO structed as a lever adapted to be raised and lowered in order to unlock it from or look it with the other member; and it is the object of the invention to provide such improvements in the means for raising and lowering the lever as shall effect a positive operation of the latter, serve to hold the lever in place on the blind or shutter, and which shall be exceedingly simple in and cheap of construction.-
The invention consists of a rod or length of wire fulcrumed or pivoted upon the frame of the blind and bent so as to form a crank-lever, the outer or angular end or portion bein g bent upward and connected with the movable member of the hinge and the opposite end being provided with means which may be taken hold of by the user to rock the cranklever in its bearings and so raise and lower the said movable member.
Reference is to be had to the annexed drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, forming a part of this specification, the same letters designating the same parts or features, as the case may be, wherever they occur.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the lower portion of a blind and the adjacent parts of a window-casing having a lock-hinge equipped with my improvement. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional detailview. Fig. 3 i s a sectional detail view showing the hinge and the improvement in plan.
In the drawings, a designates the windowcasing. b is the blind. c is the fixed member of the hinge, provided with a pintle-socket and radial slots (Z, the said fixed member being secured to the window-casing a. e is the movable member of the hinge, pivoted upon the blind-frame atf and provided at its swing ing end with a pintle p to enter the socket of the fixed member and with radial ribs or tenons to engage the slots (2. As thus far described the construction is substantially the same as that shown in United States Patent No. 393,200,granted to me November 20,1888, and reference may be had to said patent for fuller information concerning the structural character of hinges to which my invention is particularly applicable.
9 is a rod or length of wire suitably ful- 6o crumed upon the blind-frame and having its outer portion h bent at an angle to its center portion to form a crank-lever. The end of the angular portion h is bent outward under, upward outside of, and inward over the movable member towardits swinging end, so that when the rod g is rocked in its bearing on the blind-frame, as it may be by taking hold of the angularinner end i of said rod, the member 6 may be raised and lowered in a positive manner. In addition to serving as a means for raising and lowering the movable member of the hinge, the rod 9 operates to guide and keep in proper position the member c in its swinging movements.
j designates a spring, which operates upon the member g to hold it normally down into engagement with the fixed member 0.
Changes may be made in the form and arrangement of parts comprising the invention So without departing from the nature or spirit of the invention.
Having thus explained the nature of my invention and described one way of constructing and using the same, I declare that what I claim is- As a means for operating the pivoted member of a lock-hinge, the combination, with the blind-frame, of a crank-lever g, formed of a single piece of wire fulcrumed on the blind- 9o frame, the axis of said fulcrum passing through the blind-frame, the end of its outer angular part It being bent upward and around the said movable member, and its inner part 1' being bent perpendicular to its axis to provide opcrating means, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specificatiomin the presence of two subscribing witnesses, this 28th day of February, A. D. 1891.
LEVI ABBOTT. I Witnesses:
ARTHUR W. ORossLEY, O. F. BROWN.
