LEVELER FOR FORMS OF TYPE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 30, 1906.
Application filed March 17, 1904:. Serial No. 198,539.
To al?, whom it may concer-1c:
Be it known that LARTHUR SAMUEL ALLEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brookline, in the county of Norfolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Levelers for Forms of Type, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention has for its object the production of a leveler or device to be laid upon the face of type or plates keyed in a form and which may be struck by a mallet or other device to bring the type or plates to the same level preparatory to the production of stereotypes or printing. Heretofore this work has been done by laying a wooden block on the face of the type keyed in the form and striking the block with a mallet. These blocks, that they may be strong enough to stand up under the blows of a mallet and not break, are made of hard wood of considerable size and thickness, are consequently heavy to handle, and the face of the block brooms and becomes disintegrated, so that another block has to be called into play or the face of the block be planed off.
In my aim to produce a device for leveling type, of less weight, and consequently easier to handle, and possessing greater durability than the usual wooden block, I have provided the leveler or device to be herein described, it comprising a body having a face composed of a layer of tough non-metallic non-ligneous close-grained material-such, for instance as compact iiberoid or so-called leather-board or vulcanite. The top of the body referred to is also protected by a like substance that will not be disintegrated by the blows of a mallet or hammer.
Figure 1 ,in side elevation, partly broken out, shows a leveler or device embodying my invention; and Fig. 2 is a top or plan view thereof.
The device comprises a body A, having the form of a parallelogram; but this is immaterial. As is plainly illustrated in the drawings, there is a deep broad groove a' running around the entire perimeter of the body A. Where the body is rectangular or has parallel sides, it is obvious that this groove may be made to extend throughout only two of its parallel sides, if so desired. So, also, where the body has a circular or elliptical top surface the groove may be made only at opposite sides thereof. This groove is used to supplement the top surface as a handle to insure a reliable grip on the block when it is being moved about. The body has secured to it by suitable devices a., which may be screws, a face B, composed of a compact layer ofiiber oid or so-called leatlier-board, vulcanite, or other equivalent non-metallic nonligneous material.
The materail entering into the face will be hard enough to stand up under the blows transmitted through the leveler onto the type or plates keyed together in the form, but not hird enough to batter and injure the type or ates.
The top of the body is shown as provided with a top facing C, which may be of the same material as the bottom face B, said top face being held confined on the body by de? vices shown as screws b, the heads of which are represented as countersunk or standing in spaces at the upper side of said top face C.
I intend to include in my invention under the terms detachable face and detachable top any material such as named or their known substitutes other than metal or wood, and while I prefer that the leveler should be the shape of a parallelogram, as represented, yet the particular shape of the body and the face B are not essential so long as the acting part of the face represents a plane surface.
A leveler such as herein described and illustrated possesses greater durability, is lighter in Weight, and smaller in area than usual de vices used for this purpose and commonly designated in the trade as type-planers.7
I-Iaving described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A type-leveling block comprising a body portion having a deep broad groove on its opposite edges or sides by which to hand-mw In testimony whereof I have signed my nipulate the block, and having parallel upper name to this specification in the presence of 1o and lower surfaces, and a detachable facing two subscribing witnesses.
for each of said surfaces disposed in parallel planes, said facing being formed of non-me ARTHUR SAMUEL ALLEN' tallic, non-ligneous material to receive the /Vitnesses:

same to the type without injury. MARGARET A. DUNN.
