Description
No. 827,658. PATENTED JULY 31, 1906 J. V. S. PADDOOK.
GAME MAUL.
APPLICATION FILED 001223, 1905.
JAMES v. S. PADDocK, oF oEioAco, ILLINOIS.
' GAME-MAUL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 31, 1906.
Application filed October 23, 1905. Serial No. 284,104.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMES V. S. PADDooK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Game-Mauls; and I do de clare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descri tion of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates, to improvements in game-mauls.
The object of the invention is to provide an improved construction of maul or mallet for playing certain kinds of games.
With the above and other objects in view the'invention consists of certain novel'features of construction, combination, and arrangements of arts, as will be hereinafter described and c aimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a pers ective view of a maul constructed in accor ance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view. Fig. 3 is a horizontal longitudinal sectional view, and Fig. 4 is a vertical cross-sectional view of the same. W
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 denotes the body ortion or head of the maul, which is here shown and is referably elliptical in sha e, one end of w 'ch is turned upwardly an flattened, as at 2, to form a striking-nose. The opposite longitudinal sides of the body portion or head 1 are flattened, as shown at 3, and secured to said flattened sides and nose portions are rotecting-plates 4, which ma be formed of eather, metal, or other suitab e material.
In the upper side of the head 1 is formed a socket or recess 5, in which is seated a han- =dle 6. Said socket and handle are dis osed at an oblique angle to the head 1, as s own; In or near the lower end of the socket 5 is placed a load 7 of lead or other heavy material, which facilitates the balancing of the maul when in use and insures accuracy and precision in using the implement.
A maul constructed as herein shown and described will be found to be a great im rovement over the ordinary forms of mal ets or other striking devices used in playing such lawn games as To ue and croquet and is especially adapted or-playing a game called aim the fore oing description, taken in connectionwith the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes-in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A game-maul comprising a substantially elliptical-shaped body portion having formed on one end an u wardly-turned flattened nose, and flattene sides, means to protect said sides and nose, and a handle secured to said body portion at an oblique angle, substantially as described.
2. A game-maul comprising a substantially elliptical-shaped ,body ortion having formed on one end an upwardly-turned flattened nose, and flattened sides, rotectingplates arranged on said flattened nose and sides, a handle arranged in said head at an obli ue angle thereto, and a load arranged in said ody portion at the inner end of the handle, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JAMES V. S. PADDOCK. Witnesses:
