GOLF-CLUB.
To all whomz't may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES GOVAN, a subjcet of the King of GreatBritain and Ireland, and a resident of Abington, Montgomery county, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Golf-Clubs, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to golf clubs and the object of my invention is to impart better driving and putting qualities to the metal clubs.
My invention consists in so constructing the. heads of such clubs as to dispose the greatest weight of metal'at the point of impact with the ball. I
A further object of my invention consists in offsetting the hose with respect to the face of the head and advancing said hose from the heel of the head.
My invention is fully shown in the accompanying drawing, in which:

and Fig. 8, is a similar plan view illustrating a further modification of my invention.
Although I have shown in the drawing herewith views of clubs familiarly known as cleeks and putters, it will be understood that that part of my invention which relates to the disposition of the bulk of the metal at or near the center of the club or opposite the point of impact with the ball, may be applied to any of the metal clubs, such as mashies, lofters, ji gers, mid-irons or niblicks, as this feature 0 my invention is equally I valuable with all of the different forms of clubs.
In carrying out my invention, the head 1 is recessed or a ertured at several places adjacent the bee and toe-of the same, and while these recesses and apertures may be left open, they are preferably filled With a suitable material, such as a lighter metal, rubber, gutta-percha, or wood, which latter is indicated in the drawing. apertures 2 are formed extending through the head in a line substantially parallel with the club sole, while in the club shown in Figs. 3, 4 and 8, the head is apertured at 2 or recessed at 3 through its greatest width for the purpose of lightening the ends. In Fig. 4, the toe of the club is shownwith an open recess 3, while in Fig. 8, the back of the club is recessed at 3 adjacent both the toe and the heel. These apertures or recesses are shown with a filling 4 of wood in Figs. 3, 4, 5 and 8 although, as explained, other material may be employed. In all instances, however, the object of my invention is to decrease the weight of metal at the toe and heel hose 5 connected thereto, but differing from the usual goose neck, it is advanced from the heel of the club and carried at a point intermediate the heel and toe of the same; being further offset with respect to the face of the club. With such construction the user has a better control of the ball, inasmuch as a line extending from the shaft through the hose and head comes very close to the center of the face. When a club of this character has combined with it the feature of lightening the heel and toe whereby the bulk of the metal is disposed at or near the center of the head, greater efficiency in the art of putting can be acquired.
I claim:
1. A golf club having the ends of its head a ertured or recessed to lighten the same w ereby the bulk of the weight is disposed at or near the center of the head.
