RECEPTACLE.

W- R FmRBHNWS WORTH R; FAIRBANKS, OF FINE, NEW YORK.
RECEPTACLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 13, 191 *7.
Application filed January 5, 1916. Serial No. 70,502.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Wonrn R. FAIRBANKS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fine, in the county of St. Lawrence and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Receptacles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to an improved receptacle and more particularly to a butter tub or cheese box, the invention having for its primary object to produce a device of this character which is of very strong and durable construction, and will withstand the rough usage to which such receptacles are ordinarily subjected.
It is another and more particular object of the invention to provide a cheese box hav ing a body Wall of fiber constructed from a single sheet, the end edges of which are lapped upon each other and securely tacked together.
It is an additional object of the invention to Provide a top and bottom for the receptacle, of wood, a reinforcing wood band or hoop arranged exteriorly of the body wall at its lower edge and securing the same to said bottom, and a reinforcing wood band secured to the perimeter of the top of the box.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which,
Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating the preferred construction of my improved cheese box;
Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof;
Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view Fig. 4. is a top plan view.
Referring in detail to the drawing, 5 designates the cylindrical body wall of the box which is constructed from a single sheet of fiber board, the end edges of which are lapped upon each other and securely fastened together by the nails or tacks indicated at G. The inner and outer face of this body wall is entirely covered with paraffin said band to the body wall and also secure said bodywall to the bottom 8.
The removable top or cover for the box. is made up of a number of wood strips 11 arranged in the same plane and suitably-secured to each other at their contacting edges.
. This top is of circular form and a reinforcing flexible wood band or hoop 12 is secured to the edges of the several wood strips 11 by the tacks l3 and effectually prevents separation of said strips. As will be observed from reference to Fig. 3, this band projects slightly below the bottom face of the box top and upon the exterior surfaceof the body wall 5.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the construction and several advantages of the device will be fully understood. By the provision of a fiber body wall, the box is rendered moisture-proof and said wall prevented from splitting, shrinking, or warping. As this fiber is exceedingly tough, the box will withstand very severe usage or rough handling. It is apparent, of course, that the box can be constructed in various sizes and in other shapes than that disclosed in the accompanying drawing. The inven tion is also susceptible of considerable modification in the form, construction and arrangement of the several parts, and I, therefore, reserve the privilege of adopting all such legitimate changes as may be fairly embodied within the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I desire to claim and secure by Letters Patent is A receptacle of the character described including a body wall, a bottom to which one end of the body wall is secured, a removable top for the box consisting of a plurality of Wood strips arranged in the same adapted for frictional engagement upon the 1o plane, and a circnmscrlblng fiexlble Wood body wall of the box. band engaged upon the perlphery of sand In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my L r 1 1 top and fixed to the lnchvldrnl strips there signatuie 1n the plesence of two wltnesses of, said band bein of a Width greater than the thickness of the top and having one of WORTH AIRBANKS its edges flush with one surface of the top, Witnesses:
the other edge of said band projecting be- EVA WV. FAIRBANKS,
yond the opposite face of the box top and LORETTA B. \VELGH.
