WILLIAM BRETI-IOUR, F WYOMINGV'IOWNSHIP, KENT COUNTY, MICHIGAN.
SAWHORSE.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM BRETHOUR, a citizen of the United States of America, residing in .Vyoming township, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sawhorses; and I do hereby dec lare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a saw-horse such as is used especially by carpenters and other mechanics.
It is an object and purpose of my invention to make a construction which is easily assembled and as easily taken apart for purposes of transportation.
A further object of the invention consists in the provision of novel binding or tying members to be used in connection with a separable beam and supporting legs for connecting the legs and beam together into a strong and rigid structure.
A still further object of the invention consists in the provision of members of this character all of which are identical in construction and which may be made from sheet metal and stamped by use of one set of dies whereby the construction as a whole is cheaply and easily manufactured.
To attain these ends as well as others not specifically enumerated but which will appear as the description progresses, I have I embodied my invention in a construction disclosed in the accompanying drawing, in which;
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a sawhorse assembled and in operative form. Fig. 2 is an end view thereof; and Fig. 3 is an elevation of one of the tie plates or members, four of which are used in one complete saw-horse.
Like reference characters refer to like parts throughout the several views of the drawing.
Each of the tie members is formed of sheet metal and each comprises a body 1 wider at the lower than at the upperedge and from the lower edge of which a ledge 2 is bent and positioned substantially horizontal. The body 1 may be reinforced by a corrugation 3 stamped in the metal and, if desired, a number of these corrugations may be used. At each edge of the body 1 sides 4 are bent at right angles, each of these being corru- Specfcaton of Letters Patent.

gated lengthwise as indicated at 5 for the purpose of additional strength. The sides 4 are extended `above the body 1 to form ears 6 spaced apart to provide an opening 7 capable of receiving a horizontal beam of the saw-horse. Also through the body 1 of the member, openings S are made. In this connection it will be noted that when the sides 4 are bent at right angles to the body 1 they are spaced from the ends of the ledge 2 a distance sufficient to receive a leg of the saw-horse. Four of these members are used in the construction of a saw-horse being positioned in pairs adjacent each end of a horizontal beam 9 and attached to said beam by means of bolts 10 passing through the ears 6 and through the beam as shown in Fig. 2. The members adjacent each end of a beam are so located with respect to each other that the opposed sides 4 of the members project toward each other, there being in this manner provided two seats to receive the upper ends of the divergi'ng legs 11 of the saw-horse. rlhe legs are inserted between the ends of ledges 2 and the sides 4, the upper ends of said legs striking against the lower corners of the beam. Bolts 12 passed through the openings 8 and receiving thumb nuts 13 are used, it being evident that on tightening the thumb nuts the legs will be firmly bound and held in position and cannot be removed except on loosening said thumb nuts.
A device of this character is of eXceptional strength and rigidity and may be used in any of the ways that any other sawhorse may be used. Each of the metal tie members is identical with the others and all may be constructed from one set of dies. In practice a mechanic keeps only the tie members and the bolts that are used with them and when he reaches a new place of work provides the beam and legs from any suitable lumber that he may have to work with. rIhe metallic tie members are of great strength though made of comparatively thin material and add little weight to or occupy little additional space in a carpenters collection of tools.
I claim:
1. In a device of the character described, a beam, oppositely disposed tie members, depending from and secured to the beam in pairs, legs inserted between the members of each pair of members and devices to draw the members of each pair of members to- Ward each other and against the `edgesnfV said legs 4'to `thereby "bind the 'tie .members and legs together;
2. In a device of the character described, a beam, tie members each including a flat body Wider at the-'bottom than-atthe-ftop with sides bent at substantially right angles to the body at each side edge and extending aboverthe body to provide ears for attachment tothe'beam, and a ledge bent at right angles from the-lower edge of the body,'the ends of said ledge terminating a'distance from the sides, said tie members being secured to the beam in pairs adjacent each end of the beam and with the sides thereof eX- tending toward each other,flegs insertedbe` tween the ends of theledges and adjacent Copies of this patntmay be obtained for v'e cents each, by addressing the ll'tommissioner ofi'Patets,
bers to draw the members firmly against F-thefl'egs. Y
8. A tie member for Vdevices'of the char- 'laeter described comprised of aimietal'f-'body Wider at one end than at the other sides bent at substantially right angles'from the body, ears integral Withlthe sides eXtendngbeyond the narron end ofthebody-andfspaced apart adapting them Ltoreceivey a beam there-V between, and a ledgefibent from vthe Wider end of the jbody, said ledge terminating :at each enda distancefrom the said sides, substantially as described. A y Y Y In testimony whereof I 4 my-signature WILLIAM BRETHOUR.
