Description

No. 811,081. PATENTED JANLBO, 1906.
F. B. NORRIS. SUSPBNDERS.
APPLICATION FILED MAY15, 1905.
IINITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J' an. 30, 1906.
Application filed May 15, 1905- Serial N 260,552.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK B. NORRIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Helena, in the county of Lewis and Clarke and State of Montana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Suspenders, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to an improvement in suspenders.
The average suspender for men fastens at the front and back and binds upon the body of the wearer in his movements, especially in bending forward, producing discomfort. My Suspender supports the garment at the sides only and readily adjusts itself to the movements of the body without binding or strain.
In the drawings, Figure I shows a side view of the suspenders adjusted upon a person. Fig. II shows a back view of the suspenders so adjusted. Fig. III shows the suspenders in perspective.
Similar letters refer to similar parts in all the drawings.
The elastic straps or webs AA each terminate at both ends in the loops at a, secured by the adjusting-buckles e (2. Each loop a carries a cast-off or snap S. The webs A A are connected across the shoulders by a crossweb made in two sections D and D, connected by an adjusting-buckle d. There are two cords F F, one for each web A, each provided with terminal loopsf f.
Only four buttons are needed on the trousers or garment to be supported-a pair on each side. Of these the forward button of each pair is placed about two inches forward of the side seam, and the rear button is placed. about four inches back of said seam.
The adjustment of the suspender is readily seen. The main webs AA pass one over each shoulder vertically, not crossing on the back. The cast-oifs or snaps S S on both of the ends of a web A are slidably engaged with the same cord F on its respective side. The main webs A A are so lengthened or shortened by means of the adjusting-buckles e e as to bring the cross-band D D in the right position across the shoulders of the wearer and also hold the trousers at the proper height. The cross-web D D is then adjusted to the width of the shoulders by the adjusting-buckle d, so as to allow the webs A A to pass straight over the shoulders. The position of the cords ff, fixed bythe buttons 9 9, permits the websA Ato hang in an almost vertical position when the wearer is standing or sitting erect and when the body is bent permits their end catches S S to slide to the position of least resistance. The opening of these two cast-offs on each side S S is all that is necessary to release the garment from its support, and they are quickly and readily rengaged with the cords F F and closed when the garment is readjusted. It will thus be seen that the weight is attached directly beneath the support, the shoulders giving the straps the least possible bearing against the body when. the body is erect. When the body is bent forward, the position in which the old style of suspenders produces binding and strain by reason of having to conform to the arch of the back, my straps slide by the body at the sides, adjusting themselves to the new posi tion without bearing upon the back at all. Likewise, my suspender occasions no pressure upon the abdomen in any position of the wearer.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. An improvement in suspenders, consisting of two main straps or webs, having free looped ends, each end provided with an adjusting-buckle and a cast-off, and a crossstrap provided with an adjusting-buckle, in combination with. two Suspender-cords, buttoning at the ends only, to buttons placed on the sides of the garment supported, each cord being engaged by the cast-offs at each end of the same web, only.
2. An improvement in suspenders, consisting of two main elastic webs, each web l1aving free adjustable looped ends, each end provided with a cast-off, a cross-web in two seg ments, one attached to each web, a buckle adjustably connecting the two cross-segments, in combination with two cords, buttoning at the ends only, each cord being slidably engaged by both the cast-offs of one of the webs.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FRANK B. NORRIS.
