Specification of Letters Patent.

To alZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS JEFFERSON BAUGH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hopkinsville, in the county of Christian and State of Kentucky, have invented new and useful Improvements in Wire-Working Tools, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to Wire working tools designed especially for twisting and splicing wire, and has for its objects to produce a comparatively simple inexpensive device of this character in which the wire may be readily engaged and securely held by the tool, one wherein the wire may be released by and removed from between the gripping-jaws without relaxing hold upon either of the toolhandles, and one in which the tool is adapted for operation upon Wires of diflerent gage.
With these and other objects in view the invention comprises the novel features of construction and combination of parts more fully hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a tool embodying the invention, showing the clamping-jaws in closed position. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the clamping jaws open. Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 1, but viewing the tool from the opposite side. Fig. 4 is a top plan view of the tool in the position shown in Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a top plan view of one of the clamping-jaws. Fig.6 is a side elevation of the primary engaging member or jaw.
Referring to the drawings, it will be seen that the improved tool comprises a primary member 1 and a secondary cooperating member 2, pivotally connected, as at 3, with the member 1.
The member 1 comprises a handle portion 4, having at its free terminal an eye 5 and its other end formed integral with and merging into a curved portion 6, returned upon itself to produce a clampingjaw' 7, said jaw having its inner edge arranged substantially parallel with the handle 4 and provided with v a plurality of semicircular recesses 8 of relatively varying sizes, there being formed in one side face of the jaw 7, and preferably at its point of juncture with the curved portion 6, a circular socket or seat 9.
The member 2 consists of a handle portion 10, designed to normally extend parallel with the handle 4, and an angularly-bent connecting portion 11, terminating in a secondary clamping-jaw 12, having one of its marginal edges arranged substantially parallel with the handle 10 and provided with a plurality of semicircular recesses 12 of relatively varying sizes and designed in practice to register with the recesses 8, thereby producing wirereceiving seats or openings 13, while upon the terminal of the clamping-j aw 12 there is formed a circular head 14, rotatively mountedin the socket 9 and pivotally connected With the member 1 by means of the transverse pintle 3. It is to be particularly noted in this connection that the angular portion 11 of the secondary member 2 crosses the curved portion of the member 1, whereby movement of the handles 4 and 10 toward each other causes a similar movement of the clamping portions 7 and 12.
The clamping member 7 is of increased,
thickness or width comparative with the remainder of the member 1, while the clamp ing member 12 has formed thereon a lateral extension 15 of a thickness corresponding to that of the clamping member 7, there being pivotally mounted in the eye 5 an engaging member or link 16, designed for engagement with the handle 10 to secure the members in clamping position.
In practice the wire to be twisted or spliced is entered in the appropriate openings 13 between the clamping members, and the handles 4 and 10 are pressed toward each other, thereby securely clamping the wire in position, it being a parent that in order to release the wire tiie member 16 is disengaged from the handle 10, as shown in Fig. 2, thus permitting of the clamping-jaws being separated, as seen in said figure. It is to be observed in this connection that owing to the clamping-j aws being of comparative increased thickness at the wire-engaging point sufficient pressure may be brought to bear upon the Wire to maintain the same securely in clamping position between the jaws, and, furthermore, that owing to the jaw 7 being provided With a recess for the reception of the circular head upon the end of the jaw 12 a strong pivotal connection is obtained while at the same time free relative movement of the jaws is insured. Further, it is apparent that under this construction the cooperating rearwardly-opening clamping-jaws are located at one side of the tool, thus permitting ready entrance and removal of the material to or from a position therebetween, while at the same time the tool is rendered shorter and more compact and a direct clamping action on the material is insured.
Having thus fully described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. A tool of the class described, comprising a member having its forward portion returned 11 on itself and a second member pivoted to t e first-named member, said second member having a portion thereof cooperating with the returned portion of the first-named member to produce a pair of laterallydisposed rearwardly-openin clamping-jaws.
2. A tool of the Sass described, comprising a pair of crossed pivoted members having cooperating rearwardly-o ening clamping-1 aws disposed at one side 0 the tool, one of said jaws being produced by returning the forward portion of one of the members upon itself, said returned portion being of increased thickness comparative with the remainder of the member, and the other member having its clampin portion provided with a lateral extension of a thickness corresponding to the increased thickness of the first-named jaw.
3. In a tool of the class described, a pair of crossed pivoted members, one of said members having a rearwardly-extending portion constituting a clamping-jaw and provided with a laterally-opening circular socket, the other of said members being provided with a circular head pivotally seated in said socket and with a clamping portion adapted to aline and cooperate with the clamping portion of the first-named member.
