Be it known that I, AUGUsT N. RITZ, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paste-Jar Brushes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.

My invention has especial reference to brushes employed in connection with paste jars and it consists in certain peculiarities of construction and combination of parts, as will be fully set forth hereinafter in connection with the accompanying drawings, and subsequently claimed.

In the said drawings, Figure 1 represents a vertical sectional view of a paste-jar and a brush in accordance with my invention in place in the water-well of the jar, the brush being partly in section. Fig. 2 is a horizontal gectional view of the brush on the line 2 2 of Referring to the said drawings, A represents a paste-jar, a the paste-receptacle, and b a well or chamber for water, in which the brush B is to be suspended and kept moist. The said jar is preferably provided with a cap or cover (not shown) to prevent the paste from drying up. It is desirable also to prevent the water in the well from becoming evaporated or from spilling out, and to that end I have devised the brush B, (shown in said drawings,) having a handle 0 and terminating in a pintle (Z, with an intermediate enlarged portion provided with an inclined walled annular groove 6 for the reception of a compressible gasket f, securely held within said groove by the upper portion 9 of said intermediate part and the lower partly-conical portion h thereof. This handle part, intermediate portion, and pintle are all preferably turned from a single piece of wood, and the brush proper, B, is held to said pintle (Z by a tubular piece of metal '5, which surrounds the said pintle, while the lower part of said tube & receives the bristles of the brush and holds them by reason of flattening of said tube, the upper part of which is held to the wooden pintle by being indented or pressed into the wood at the point j.

When the brush B is in place, as shown in Fig. 1, with a little water in the lower part of the well I), the described gasket f effectually seals the top of said well, and thus prevents evaporation or other loss of said water, and consequently keeps the brush always moist and in condition for use, and at the same time the brush can be readily and quickly removed from its seat whenever necessary.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

The herein-described brush consisting of a handle having a conical central portion formed with an inclined groove and terminating at its lower end in a pintle, a compressible gasket fitting said groove, a tubular. holder having the upper portion thereof engaged by said pintle to which it is fastened, and bristles secured in the lower portion of the holder.
