PIPE-WRENCH- Specification of Letters Patent.
Application and June 22,1905. Serial No.266,482.
To all whom it may concern: Be itknown that I, HENRY C. BARLOW, a citizen of the United States, residing at Goldendale, in the county of Klickit'at and State v of Washin ton, have invented a new and useful Pi e-l renchfof which the following is a speci cation.
This invention relates to 'pipe and rod wrenches, and has for its object to simplify andimprove the construction and increase the efliciency and utility of devices of this character. j
With these and. other objects inview, which will appear asth nature of the invention is better understoo the same consists in certain novel features of construction, as hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and in which corresponding parts are denoted by like designating characters, is illustrated the preferred form of embodiment of the invention capable of carrying the same into practical operation, it being understood that the inventlon is not necessarily limited thereto, as various changes in the shape, proportions, and general assemblage of the parts may be resorted to without departing from the principle-of the invention or sacri 'cing any of its advantages.
In the drawings thus employed, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improved implement" arran ed for grasping a relatively small pipe; and ig. 2 is a side view, partly in section, with the implement arranged for grasping a relatively large pipe. Fig 3 is a rear elevation of the implement arranged as in Fig. 2.
The improved implement comprises a stock 10, having at one end a'stationary jaw 1 1, formed with concaved surfaces 12 13, provided with spaced transverse teeth 14 15 and with semicircular spaced ears 16 17 A pin 18 is disposed through the ears 16 17 and the space between them and at one side of the center of the same, the object to be hereinafter explained. A movable jaw member 19 is formed with hook 20 at one end and a central semicircular disk 21 at the other end for position between the cars 16 17 and With an aperture 22. for receiving the pin 18 and lar er in diameter than the pin as shown in ig. 2. The jaw member 19 is also formed with curved lateral shoulders 23 24 for bearing constantly upon the ears 16 17 at the side op posite to the hooked terminal 20 of the movabl'e'jaw member, so that the strain is borne Patented Jan. 16, 1906.
almost entirely by the shoulder. portion of the jaw member and the pin 18 relieved from transverse strain. Thus a comparatively light structure is capable of withstandin a very heavy strain, as will be obvious. he
tionary jaw and for coaction therewith.
By this simple arrangement a very stron and durable implement is produced whic may be. employed for grasping pipes or rods of a wide. range of sizes by reason of the two concaved sur aces 14 15, as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2, the inner cavity 14 in conjunction with the movable jaw member for rasping the larger pipes (indicated at 26 in ig. 2) and the outer cavity 15 for grasping the smaller sizes in conjunction with the same movable jaw member, as indicated by dotted lines 27 in Fig. 1.
The parts can be constructed from steel or iron, as preferred, and can be inexpensively manufactured, as there are few parts and require very little fitting or hand or machine work to produce the same.
Havin thus described the invention, what is claime is v i inner face of the movable jaw member is prol vided with spaced transverse. teeth 25, in-. clined reversely to the teeth 14 15,'of the sta-' In a wrench, a stock having a stationary jaw at one end with two or more concaved verse pin disposed at one side of t e center thereof, a movable jaw member having a hook at one end and With spaced transverse teeth in its inner face and a semicircular member bearing between said ears and with a transverse aperture for receiving said pin and larger than the same, said movable jaw having ateral shoulders bearing constantly upon said -spaced ears at the side opposite from said terminal hook.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
HENRY c. BAltLQW.
