' AUTOMOBILE-FRAME.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed May 29, 1905.
Patented Jan. 9, 1906.
Serial No. 262,782.
To all whont it warty concern:
Be it known that we, ALLIE RAY l/VELOH and FRED STIMsoN l/VELoH, citizens of the United States, residing at Pontiac, county of Oakland, State of Michigan, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Automobile-Frames; and we declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part'of this specification.
This invention relates to automobileframes; and the object of our improvements is to secure an improved frame having increased strength at the part where it is narrowed down toward the front of the machine.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the frame embodying our invention. Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1.
A A are the side pieces, bent inward at A A and continued in the direction of the parts A A in A A. The side pieces are preferably U-shaped in cross-section, the hollow being inward.
B B are metal strips, each lying toward one end in the hollow of the portion A of the side pieces for a considerable part of the length of said portion and extending toward the other end parallel to the portions A A of the side pieces.
C is a cross-piece extending across the frame and riveted to the portions A A of the frame and having the ends of the metal pieces B secured thereto by rivets.
B is a cross-piece extending from one of the pieces B to the other and riveted at its ends to said metal pieces.
D is the crank-case of the engine, securedto the bentin portions A A of the frame by studs (2 and forming a brace to this portion of the frame.
In frames of the kind herein illustrated it has been found that they are liable to give way or bend at the portions A A where the broader portion is bent inward and continued in the narrow portion. The construction above described strengthens the frame at these parts and forms a girder-like construction which not only prevents strain from vertical forces, but is adapted to resist horizontal stresses.
The strips B are made of a size and shape that shall bring their edges against the flanges of the portion A of the side pieces.
l/Vhat we claim is- 1. In a vehicle-frame, the combination of a side piece bent inward for a portion of its length and a strip rigidly secured to the bentin portion of said side piece, extending beyond said bentin portion at a distance from said side piece and rigidly secured toward its 7 end to said side piece.
2. In a vehicle-frame, the combination of two side pieces bent inward for adjacent portions of their lengths, a strip rigidly secured to the bent-in portion of each of said side pieces extending beyond said bent-in portion at a distance from said pieces and means for rigidly securing said strips together and to the side pieces at points remote from said bent-in portions of the side pieces.
3. In a vehicle-frame, the combination of two side pieces bent inward for adjacent portions of theirlengths, a strip rigidly secured to the bent-in portion of each of said side pieces extending beyond said bent-in portion at a distance from said pieces and means for rigidly securing said strips together and to the side pieces at points remote from said bent-in portions of the side pieces, and a brace extending between said bent-in portions of the side pieces.
4:. In a vehicle-frame, the combination of two side pieces bent inward for adjacent portions of their lengths, a strip rigidly secured to the bent-in portion of each of said side pieces extending beyond said bentin portion at a distance from said pieces and means for securing said strips rigidly together and to the side pieces at points remote from said bent-in portions of the side pieces, and abrace extending between said strips.
5. In a vehicleframe, the combination of two side pieces bent inward for adjacent pore tions of their lengths, a strip secured to the bent-in portion of eachof said side pieces, extending beyond said bent-in portion at a distance from said pieces, means for securing said strips rigidly together and to the side pieces at points remote from said bent-in portions of the side pieces, and a crank-case secured to said bent-in portions of the side frames, and serving as a brace therefor.
6. In a vehicle-frame, the combination of a side piece U-shaped in cross-section bent inward for a portion of its length and a strip ICC."
rigidly secured to the bent-in portion of said In testimony whereof we sign this specifi side piece within the hollow of the U-shaped cation in the presence of two Witnesses cross-section with its edges abutting against ALLIE R. WELCH. the flanges, said strip'extending beyond said FRED STIMSON WELCH. bent-in portion at a distance from said side Witnesses:
piece and rigidly secured toward its end to FLORENCE S. LOOKWOOD said side piece. FLORA MOLEAN.
