Description

B. F. RIX.
VEHIGLE POLE.
(Nd Model.)
No. 393,787. Patented Dec. 4, 1888.
UNITED STATESCPATENT OFFICE.
BENJAMIN F. RIX, OF KA'LAMAZOO, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOH TO R. ARTHUR STONE, OF SAME PLACE.
VEHICLE-POLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 393,787, dated December 4, 1888.
Application filed Tune 23, 1888. Serial No. 278,022- (No model.)
To all whom it 'II'LCLZ/ cancer/1.:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN F. RIX, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kalathe strips A were at intervals or consisted of mazoo, county of Kalamazoo,- State of Michil gan, have invented a new and useful Vehicle- Iole, of which the following is a specification. I
description and claims, designed to add to its strength, utility, and appearance.
In the drawings forming a part of this speci- 9 fication, Figure 1 is a View looking against the left side of Fig. 2; Fig. 2, a View looking against the right side of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a cross-section on line 2 2 in Fig. 1.
Referring to the lettered parts of the drawings, A A are two longitudinal separated strips or side pieces. These strips converge from the rear end to the front end of the pole. They may be integral with each other at the front end, or at upper end in Fig. 1, or not, as desired. The strips are held apart by a center piece, B, to which piece the said strips are at tached by the transverse bolts 0. The center piece has a series of slots, (1, and between the contiguous ends of these the bolts 0 are passed through solid wood, Fig. 3. By this means the strips A rest against the solid edges of the center piece, 13, throughout its length, thus making a firmer and stronger pole than would be the case it theparts which separate a number of pieces, and especially when studs are employed at the points only where the bolts pass through.
This pole may be used flat-wise or edgewise and on any kind and style of vehicle; but it will be found of especial. utility on two-horse road-carts, owing to its stiffness, lightness, and strength.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and d esirc to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
1. A vehicle-pole comprisin the side strips, a continuous center piece between the side strips throughout their length, said strip having the slots through the same at intciwals, and the bolts passed through the side strips and through the center pieces between the slots, substantially as set forth.
2. A vehicle-pole comprising the side strips, the center piece having the series of slots, and the bolts attaching said parts together, substantially as set forth.
In testimony of the foregoing I have here unto subscribed my name in presence of two witnesses.
. BENJAMIN r. RIX.
