Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented s... cc, ieos.
Application filed June 28, 1964. Serial No. 214,661.
To all wit/rm it may; concern:
Be it known that l, Gnono Lnenn, engineer, a subject of the Emperor of Austria'Hungary, and c resident of No. 34 vveimarerstrnssc,
Cir ottenhurg, in the Empireof Germanvq nvented certain new and useful lmprovei ments in lvleans for Indicating the Loaded in iition of Firearms, (for Which'Lctters nt of Greet Britain, No. 13,1457, of June 10, 550%, have been granted to me,) ofwhich the following is an exact, full, and clear descri pti on.
Tlhis invention relates to means whereby it will be readily indicated on the exterior of "resins whether or not a cartridge iscontsined n the cartridge-chamber of the barrel. The era back or" not being able to see on the out- .ide of the ordinary military firearms the coded condition of the some is very annoying, especisllyin connection withfirearmshaving n automatic loading device as, forinstonce, c known recoil-loading lirearmshecause hey are regularly reloaded after every dishnrge, and therefore in the event of carecert-ridge is inserted in the cartridge-chem her--71. 5., when closing the breech-the certridge will'strike against the wedge-surfaces and the lovers or members will be nntomnt icnlly thrown outwnrd, in consequence of which sufficiently long or wide and very conspicuous ports on the on'tsid'e'of the will indicate the loaded condition the latter. it is essential that the part extending into the ccrtrilge chnmber be formed with 'a wedge-,- sheped surfaceend bear laterally upon the outer surface or rim of the cartridge, relieve--- by the requisite projection can be obtained forindicnting the loaded condition of the firearm. The invention is preferably carried out in such e, manner that the indicating-levers may also. serve cartridge-extractors.
The object of the invention is to prodncc a very striking indication of the loaded condition of the firearm, and it can also be fulfilled by lever mechanism, by means of which a small indicating movement of the members which are actuated during the insertion of the l cartridge produces an increased movemcntof l the special indicating part.
I In the accompanying drawings, Figures 1 i and 2 are longitudinal sections through the i Fig. 2. 3 and 4' show the indicatinglever employed as an extractor. Figs. 5 and l. 6 show in side elevation the positions of the parts shown in Figs. 3. and t. Fig.7 is a modification. The indicating means, for which. is used a' lover or equivalent member-such as a pawl, a. slide, and the like with an indicating priojec'tion--may be located on the receiver or on the movable breech part or breech-bolt.
According to the construction shown in Figs. 1 and 2 theindicating-lever ismounted in aslot of the fixed receiver w behind the barrel or cartridge-chamber b. This lever is fulcrumed at c and at'its front end has a. wedge-shaped projection k1, movable laterally in e. recess in the receiving end of the barrel, where it bears against the casing or rim of the cartridge when 2. cartridge is'contained in the chamber. By means oj-the spring-f the lever 2f tends to more inward. If no cartridge is in the chamber. the projection lt'occupics the position shown in Fig. 1, and when in this position the back or projectionjof the lever is lowered flush with the receiver 1 but as soon as e. cartridge is inserted in the chambcrb the lever z'must, in consequence of the engngementof the cartridge with the wedge-shaped projection k, move outward against the notion of the spring and finally as sume such position that the back or projection j protrudes from; the receiver, Fig. 2. Consequently this serves as a. true indication that e. cartridge is contained in the cartridgechnmber, the rim of the cartridge forming the support for the end of the lever. The projection /r is fiat at its inner end and on itsrear face is inclined to permit the free insertion of thecsrtridge. The indicating-lever may be mounted on a movable breech part or the breeeh-bolt, inwhich event the inclined surface of the depending projection must be at the front instead oihat the rear, whereby in consequence of the lever impinging against the cartridge when the breech-bolt moves forward the outward movement of the lever occurs during the closing of the breech. This construction is shown in Figs. 3 to 6. .Inthie hrrangoment the lever is subjected to the action of the spring c, so as to oscillate inwardly:
