To (all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EMIL EBERHARDT, engineer, of No. 5 Grabowerstrasse,Stettin, Germany, have invented new and useful Improvements in Fire-Tube Boilers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has for its object the construction of a fire-tube boiler in which one or more smoke-consuming chambers having adjoining water-spaces on several sides are arranged between the fire-chamber and the firetubes.
A further object of my invention is to provide a fire-tube boiler which will be simple in construction and economical in operation. In boilers of this class at present in use it is found that it is difficult to secure a complete combustion of the furnace-gases without in creasing the consumption of fuel to a great extent.
By reason of the novel construction of my improved boiler, which will hereinafter be fully explained, I am enabled to obtain a complete combustion of the furnace-gases, and
thereby obtain a greater heating power with a given amount of fuel than is secured by former devices of this character.
The essential feature of my invention is the arrangement of the smoke-consuming chamber or chambers between the smoke-box and the chamber in the water-space of the boiler, the smoke-consuming chambers being provided with an air-pipe passing through the smoke-box.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a transverse section of my improved boiler. Fig. 2 is a section through the line C D of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a section through the line A B of Fig. 1'. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal vertical section on the line G H of Fig. 2, showing form of smoke-box. Figs. 5 and 6 are respectively a section through the line E F of Fig. 4 and a plan view of the smoke-box.
I will now proceed to describe my invention with reference to the drawings and then more particularly point out the distinctive features of my apparatus in the following claims.
My apparatus comprises the usual shell or casing and is provided with fire-chamb ers e e, which are arranged in the two lower flametubes. Above these tubes is a smoke-consuming tube a, which is connected with the fire-chambers by the smoke-box 6, (shown in Figs. 4 and 6,) while the fire-tubes 0, arranged on both sides of the smokeconsumption chamber a, are connected therewith by a passage f. The other ends of the fire-tubes communicate with the chimney p, arranged above the smoke-box. The smoke-box b is limlad with fire-brick or-other similar materla 1".
In the outer wall of the smoke-box b I provide one or more openings Zfor the admission of air, the width of which may be varied by means of dampers d.
Formed by the walls 'm and n of the smokeboX is a chamb erhfor the preliminary heating of the air. k represents walls or partitions arranged within the chamber 71. formed by the wallsm and n of the smoke-box 1) whereby the fresh air upon entering the openings Z is forced over the surface of the smoke-box in proximity to the fire before passing out of the nozzle-pipe a into the smoke-consuming passage. The pipe 0 is not lined with fire-brick or other restraining material, and thus the furnace-gases passing over it unimpeded are heated to an intense degree.
When the boiler is heated, the furnacegases, following the course above described, exercise a suctional action on the nozzle-pipe 0, whereby the air entering through the openings Z is drawn into the double chamber of smoke-box b. As the air passes about the partitions k and into the nozzle-pipe c it is intensely heated, and complete combustion of the furnace-gases is eifec ted.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

In a boiler, the combination of a shell, fire-chambers therein, a smoke-consumption chamber arranged above said fire-chambers, a smokeboX connectingsaid fire-chambers andsaid smoke-consumption chamber, fire tubes partly surrounding and communicating with said smoke-consumption chamber, a chimney mounted above said smoke-box and connected to said fire-tubes; an airfire-chambers therein, a smoke-consumption 2. 3. In a boiler, the combination of a shell, fire-chambers therein, a smoke-consumption chamber arranged above said lire-chambers, fire-tubes partly surrounding said smokeconsumption chamber and communicating therewith, a smoke-box, a chimney mounted above said smoke-box and communicating with said fire-tubes; an air-chamber formed by the walls of said smoke-box, and a nozzle connection between said air-chamber and smoke-consumption chamber.
4. In a boiler, the combination of a shell, fire-chambers therein; a smoke-consumption chamber arranged above said fire-chamber, a smol ebox, fire-tubes partly surrounding said smoke-consumption chamber and com municating therewith, a chimney mounted above said smoke-box and communicating with said heating pipes; an air chamber formed by the walls of said smokeboX, a nozzle connection between said air-chamber and said smoke-c011sumption chamber air-admission ports in said air-chamber provided with dampers for regulating the admission of air, and directing-walls within said air-chamber for directing the course of the air admitted through said openings.
