Description

No. 808,049. PATENTED DEC. 19, 1905. W. A. HARDY.
INVALIDS OOMMODB.
APPLIOATION FILED NOV. 7,1903.
Q. [Ma BY W UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM A. HARDY, OF LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 19, 1905.
Application fil d November '7, 1903. Serial No. 180.238.
sels of various lengths may be employed and also in equipping the chair with handy receptacles for articles necessary to complete the device.
Finally, the invention has for its object to provide a device of the character described which will be attractive, strong and durable, and one that will be simple in operation and construction, as well as comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel details of construction and operation described in the specification and illustrated in the drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of the commode. Fi 2 is a vertical sectional view. Fig. 3 is a Iongitudinal sectional view of one of the arms. F ig. 4 is a similar view showing the paper-roll. Fig. 5 is a transverse sectional view of the arm, showing the forward end of the same and the roll-retaining key; and Fig. 6 is a detail view in elevation of the roll-retaining key.
In the drawings the numeral 1 designates the chair, having its lower portion 2 boxed in and either resting directly on the floor or supported by casters. The lower portion2, which may be called the cabinet, is preferably lined with a suitable metal, such as sheet zinc. A door 2 is provided in the rear, and slide-rails 3 are secured to the sides of the cabinet. A
shelf 4, designed to support a vessel, such as 5, rests on the rails 3, which are provided in pairs on both sides of the cabinet in order that the shelf may be supported at various heights for the reception of vessels of different lengths, access to which may be had through the door 2 The bottom 6 of the chair comprises a seat 9, provided with a hole 8 and a suitably-removable closure 7, which covers the seat when the same is not in use. Arms 10, supported by brackets 11 and posts 12, are hollowed out to form receptacles 13, having swinging covers 14, pivoted by screws 15, set into the walls of said arms. The covers 14 fit flush with the sides of the arms, constituting tops or resting portions thereof, and are adapted to be swung to' one side to expose the receptacle. The receptacles 13 are designed to receive such toilet articles as may be of use and convenience.
One of the arms is preferably provided with a paper-roll 16, having trunnions 17, supported by plates 18, provided with suitable bearing-apertures 19 and arranged at the ends of the receptacle 13. In order that the roller may be readily removed for the purpose of renewing the paper, a key 20, fitting in a recess 21 in the front end plate 18, is provided. This key is formed with a concaved end 22, adapted to bear on the upper surface of the trunnion 17, while shoulders 23 prevent upward displacement of the key. A tongue 24 on the key terminates flush with the upper edge of the plate, whereby the key may be moved laterally to disengage it from the recess 21 when it is desired to remove the roll 16.
It will be readilyunderstood that the paper is at all times protected, and by simply swinging the cover 14 to one side the paper may be unwound from the roll.
Acommode constructed as herein described affords a very compact as well as convenient and useful device, especially the feature of the arms constituting receptacles, which are I quite necessary to complete an operative apparatus of the nature herein set forth.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a device of the nature indicated, a chair comprising a cabinet, arms supported above the cabinet provided with receptacles and I In testimony whereof I afiiX my signature pivoted covers therefor, one of said reoep- I in presence of two Witnesses.
tacles being provided With plates having WILLIAM A HARDY bearing-apertures, a paper-roll supported in 5 the apertures, and a key fitting in one of the I Vitnesses:
plates for locking the roll in place, substan- I J. D l/VILLIAMs,
tially as described. I S. E. WILKINSON.
