EDOUARD HOOQ, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO AUGUST (JAPLAN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
CIGARETTE-MAKING MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 19, 1905.
T0 at whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDOUARD Hoco, a citizen of the French Republic, residing in the borough of Brooklyn, county of Kings, city and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cigarette-Making Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to cigarette-making machines, and has for its object to produce a construction which can be conveniently carried in the pocket and which will operate efliciently as an implement for making cigarettes.
In the accompanying drawings I have shown in detail a construction in which one form of my invention is embodied.
In the drawings, Figure I is a side view of an implement embodying my invention. Fig II is an enlarged section on the line 2 2 of Fig. I. Fig. III is a view showing the con- Fig. IV is a view similar to Fig. II, showing the two molding-slides in their extended positions; and Fig. V is an illustrated drawing showing the capability of the molding-slides for independent movement.
In the drawings, a represents a semicylindrical section of the casing. b is a similar section. The sections a and b are hinged together with a joint 0, extending longitudinally of the structure, and the section b preferably carries a plurality of end rings (1. The free edges of the sections are indicated by the letter f Sliding in the section a of the case is a semicylindrical molding-section 0, provided with a handle or knob g, running in a slot e, extending longitudinally of the casing-section. The mold-section e is also provided internally with an abutment or ledge h, serving as a guide for placing tobacco in the mold and also serving as means for causing the two mold-sections to slide together in one direction. The other semicylindrical section b of the casing is similarly provided with a sliding mold section or member t, likewise provided with a knob j and a ledge or abutment 7c for the same purpose as the ledge The casing a b may be of any desired cross-section or in the form of a grid or cage and the sliding mold may be similarly shaped. i
In using the construction embodying my invention the following mode of procedure may be followed: The mold and its casing are opened into the position shown in Fig. III. The tobacco is placed in the device and the mold and easing are swung upon the pivot or hinge 0, so as to pack the tobacco firmly into the structure. The parts are in the position shown in Fig. I. The mold is thereupon slid out of the casing by pressing in a longitudinal direction upon the knob or handle g, the parts finally assuming the position shown in Fig. IV, the ledge h coming behind the ledge lc, so as to thrust the moldsection 11 forward. A tube of paper is then slipped over the mold containing tobacco for substantially the entire length of the said mold. Thereupon the mold sections are withdrawn one at a time, as indicated diagrammatically in Fig. V, into the casing of the apparatus until they are entirely withdrawn into the same, as shown in Figs. I and III, and the body of tobacco contained in the mold remains within the cigarette-tube of paper, thereby constituting a cigarette.
It is understood that the forms and parts may be changed without departing from the spirit of my invention and that the terms used in the appended claims are intended to include all forms of device, which in view of the prior art may be fairly held to be equivalents thereof.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
1. In a cigarette-making machine, the combination of a casing or inclosure and a tubular mold divided longitudinally into sections, which sections are adapted to slide within the casing independent of each other.
' 2. In a cigarette making machine, the
combination of a casing or inclosure and a longitudinally divided sectional tubular mold sliding therein; the said sections being provided with abutments engaging each other.
3. In a cigarette -making machine, the combination of a casing or inclosure com prised, in part, by a plurality of sections hinged together by their longitudinal edges and a longitudinally-divisible sectional mold, sections of the said mold being carried by the respective sections of the casing.
EDOUARD HOCQ.
