Description

T. PAR SONS DICKERMAN, OF NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT.
Letters Patent No. 80,712, dated August 4, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT BASE-BURNING STOVES.
@112 fitlgttult tttrmt in in flgrst'itttters went amt netting rent at its same.
To ALL WHOM IT MAY CONOERN:
Be it, known that I, T. PARSONS DICKERMAN, of New Haven, in the county of New Haven, and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Improvement in Base-Burning Stoves; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanyingdrawings, and the letters of reference markedv thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitutepart of this specifics; tion, and represent, in
Figured, a side view of a portion of a base-burning stove.
Figure 2, a vertical central section of the same, and in Figure 3 a different modification of my improvement.
Thisinvention relates to an improvement in that class of stoves commonly called base-burners, that is, stoves which have a cylinder or reeeptacle in the centre, over the fire-box, to receive the quantity of coal which falls into the fire-box to supply the consumption of coal burned in the fire-box.
' In this class of stoves a greatdifficulty is experienced from thefact that if, perehanec, the fire, from any cause, is extinguished, it is necessary to remove all the coal in the reservoir before the fire can be rekindled. Theobject of this invention is to overcomethis difficulty, and to this end it consists in the arrangement of a slide or cut-off at the base of the reservoir, so thakiii case of the extinguishment of the fire, or from whatever cause, it is desirable to cut oi? the supply of coal, it may be easily accomplished.
To enable others to construct and use my improvement, I will proceed to describe the same, as illustrated in the accompanying drawings. Y I
A'is the outer cylinder, B the inner, the fire-box "being immediately below the inner cylinder, in the usual manner.
Near thc'basc of the inner cylinder, I form a slot, it, upon opposite sides, so that through the door Got the outer cylinder at slide, D, may be passed through the slots in the inner cylinder, as seen in fig. 2, being worked through the coal in the cylinder, so that when'the slide rests in both slots, as in fig. 3, it will support the coal in the cylinder or reservoir, then the fire or coals below may be removed and the fire rekindled, and when so rekindled, the. slide may be removed, and permit the coal to fall into the fire-box.
If, as in. some stoves of this class, the door is much narrower than the diameter of the inner cylinder, thcn the slide or cut-ofi'l) may be made in two or more parts, each part insert-ed separately.
To adaptthis invention to stoves already constructed, a band, E, as seen in fig- 3, formed with cars F projecting downward, may be fitted on over the lower end of the inner cylinder, and a rod, d, placed throughthe said ears, so that the .slide may be passed below the lower edge of the band over the rod cl, and be supported by the said rod.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isp In combination with the reservoir or cylinder ]3 of a base-burning stove, I claim the slide or out-off D, arranged and applied substantially in the manner hercin set forth.
T. PARSONS DIOKERMAN.
