To a whmn it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JOHN R. DAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Huntington, in the county of Huntington and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to fasteners for paper, files, and the like of the variety operating by means of a clamping action, so as to admit of rapid use by slipping on and off the papers.

The fastener is of the type constructed of wire having portions crossed to form loops and gripping elements, the purpose being to greatly increase the number of engaging points, thereby adding materially to the efficiency of the fastener, also having a central loop, the purpose being to form a finger-piece to be grasped when placing the fastener in position or removing it from papers or other articles, thereby greatly increasing its practical utility.

For a full description of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction of the means for effecting the result reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings.

While the invention may be adapted to different forms and conditions by changes in the structure and minor details without departing from the spirit oressential features thereof, still the preferred embodiment thereof is shown in the accompanying drawings, in Which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a fastener of the preferred form. Fig. 2 is a front view thereof. Fig. 3 is an edge view. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a modification. Fig. 5 is a front view thereof. Fig. 6 is an edge view of the modification.

Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.

The fastener is constructed in different sizes and of different gaged wire and comprises side loops 1 and a middle loop 2. Each side .loop comprises members 3 and 4, which cross each other and constitute gripping elements between which the papers or other articles to be secured are held. The gripping elements 4 are arranged inthe same plane and are somewhat longer than the gripping elements 3, so as to facilitate the application of the fastener to the papers to be secured. The gripping elements 3 are united at their converged ends and overlie the gripping elements 4 and act in opposition thereto to clamp any object passed between the elements 3 and 4. The loop 2 is centrally disposed with reference to the loops 1 and may lie in the plane parallel therewith, as shown in Fig. 4:, or occupy a position at a right angle to the plane of the loops 1, as shown in Fig. 1, the latter construction being preferred, as it admits of the loop forming a finger-piece, which may be more conveniently grasped when placing the fastener in position or removing it from papers or like articles. Short bends 5 are formed at the juncture of the gripping elements 3 with the free ends a of the corresponding elements of the loop 2, and these short bends are curved or deflected away from the plane of the clamp elements 4 to provide a flaring space to admit of papers easily passing between the elements 3 and 4: when placing the fastener in position. The elements of the loop 2 are intertwisted adjacent to the short bends 5, as shown at 6, thereby preventing separation or spreading of the elements 3 at their lower ends and preserving the shape of the heart-shaped figure formed by said elements 3.

A paper-fastener constructed in accordance with this invention is adapted to grip the papers between the elements 3 and 4 at their point of crossing and between the upper ends of the loops 1 and 2. It will thus be seen that the fastener grips the papers at opposite ends and is'thereby enabled to hold them more securely than if they were constructed to grip said papers at one end only. The fingerpi'ece provided in the construction shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3 enables the fastener to be placed in position and removed with a minimum amount of inconvenience and annoyance and obviates injurious pressure upon the finger-nail or finger, such as is commonly experienced in the use of paper-fasteners and clips as generally constructed. The elements 4: and the looped finger-piece 2 prevent the thumb and finger coming in contact with the paper when sliding the same between the gripping members, thereby admitting of placing the fastener in position with the least annoyance and inconvenience.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. A paper-fastener comprising a middle and cooperating sidegripping members of loop form, the elements of the middle loop being intertwisted at their free ends and the elements of each of the side loops constituting .independent gripping members.

2. A paper-fastener comprising cooperating gripping elements lying in a plane, and a centrally-disposed finger-piece projected from the plane of the gripping elements about at a right angle and adapted to cooperate therewith to grip an article placed between them.

3. A paper-fastener comprising cooperating gripping elements lying in a plane, and a cooperating loop-shaped gripping member arranged approximately in a plane at a right angle to the plane of the gripping elements and forming a finger-piece.

A paper-fastener comprising a side and middle loops, the component parts of each side loop being crossed and forming gripping elements lying in a plane and the middle loop forming a gripping element and arranged approximately at a right angle to the plane of the side loops and constituting a finger-piece.

5. A paper-fastener comprising a middle and side loops, the latter having their inner intertwisted.
