WILLIAM ROBBERT OELKRAG, OF BAYONNE, NEW 7 JERSEY.
' W R E N C H i A Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 5, 1905.
Application filed May 24, 1905. Serial No- 262,100.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that LWILLIAM ROBBERT OEL- KRAG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bayonne, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to wrenches of the class known as monkey-wrenches and the object thereof is to provide an improved combination-wrench of this class which may also be used as a pipe-wrench; and with this object in view the invention consists in a combination-wrench of the class specified constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a side view of my improved wrench, part of the construction being in section; Fig. 2, a perspective view showing another part of the wrench in section, and Fig. 3 a transverse section 011 the line 3 3 of Fig. '1.
My improved wrench comprises a bar or shank member a, provided at one end with a handle I) and at the opposite end with a stationary jaw member 0, and on which is mounted a movable sliding jaw member d. The stationary jaw member 0 comprises two jaws c and c and these jaws are held at an angle to each other, said angle being in the construction shown about one hundred and thirty-five degrees, the angle of these jaws being similar to that of the jaws d and d of the movable jaw member (Z, the angle of the jaws d and d being shown in Fig. 3. The jaw d operates in connection with the jaw 0?, and said jaw d is provided with an eXten sion (1, which projects in the direction of the handle 6, and in the inner face of the jaw d and the extension (1* recess dyin which is placed a movable plate (i and the inner side of the plate d and the corresponding face of the shank or bar a is serrated or roughened, as shown at (1 and passed through the extension d* of the jaw d is a thumb-and-iinger set-screw e, which bears on the plate d and by means of which the movable or sliding jaw member (if may be thereof is a longitudinal locked at any desired point of adjustment on the shank or bar a.
The jaw (i of the movable jaw member d is provided in the face thereof with a recess e in which is pivoted a supplemental jawblock 6 and the side walls of the recess e are provided with curved slots 6 through which is passed a pin a which also passes through the supplemental jaw 6 and secured to the outer side of the jaw d is a platespring f, one end of which projects over the supplemental jaw e and is curved outwardly, as shown at f and secured to said supplemental jaw e and to the jaw d by screws, pins, bolts, or otherwise, as shown at).
The adjacent faces of the stationary jaw c and the supplemental jaw e are provided with transverse teeth 9 or otherwise roughened, so as to enable said jaws to grip a pipe, and the jaws c and (2 form a pipe-wrench which may be operated in the usual manner,
and by placing the jaws c and c at an angle to each other, as hereinbefore described, and the jaws d and d at a corresponding angle to each other I provide means whereby my improved wrench may be operated either as an ordinary monkey-wrench, the aws c and d being employed for this purpose, or as a pipe-wrench, in which case the jaws c and e are employed, and the angle at which the jaws c and e are set facilitates the use of my improved .wrench as a pipe-wrench, while the spring-plate f, or the outwardly-curved end f 2 thereof, holds the supplemental jaw e in position for use at all times, and the operation of this part of the wrench will be readily understood.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A wrench of the class described, compris- I ing a shank member provided at its end with two jaws which project in difierent direc tions and at an angle to each other, an adjustable jaw member mounted on said shank and provided with two jaws which correspond in position with the jaws on the shank member; one of the jaws of the adjustable jaw member being provided in its bearingsurface with a recess the side walls of which are provided with oblong apertures, a supplemental jaw-block mounted in said recess, a pin passing through said jaw-block and said apertures, a spring secured to the ad justable jaw member and to the jaw-block and adapted to hold the latter in a Predeter- I enoe of the subscribing Witnesses, this 23d mined position, and means for adjusting the supplemental jaw member on the shank member, substantially as shown and de- 5 scribed.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed myname, in pres- I day of May, 1905.
