@te .Stimuli feierten tu in time tetters atrnt inn mating patiti the sans.
Be it known that I, W. II.` PARKER, of Memphis, county of Shelby, and Stateof Tennessee, have invented a. new and useful Improvement in Smoke-Stacks; and I do hereby declare'that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction andV operation-ot` the same, reference being had to the annexeddrawings, making apart of this specification, in which- Figure lis a perspective view.
Figure 2, a sectional view.
A A, boat.
E,`F,.and G, three sectior'fs oIstack.
H, remnant of original stack.
B B, racks. i
C C, latches.
D D, springs.
I I, spring-catches.
A A A, levers. v i
I constructmy boat in the usual form, to which I add an extrusmoke-staek, constructed' in three sections,
on the telescope plan, which tits closely, when folded down, around the original chimney or smoke-stack.
,The object of nly invention is to provide men-of-War, and other steam-vessels, with an adjustable smokestack, constructed in such a manner that when the stack is in positionit serves as a rejacket to the original stack, and, in case of the stack being injured by shot or accident, the adjustable stack can then be elevated to the'position originally occupied by the other stack. as' shown ng. 2, where it is retained in positionby means of the spring-catches I I.
My stack is elevated by operation of the leversA A A, which causes latches C C to act alternately upon raeksB B, springs D D holding latches C C to racks B B.
`I lower my stack by withdrawing the springs I I, by means 'of chains or ropes attached to the upper ends of said -springs I I, and at the same time contracting andexpanding, alternately, the lower o'r projecting ends of latches C C, in connection with the operation of levers A A A.
I claim the combination of three sections, E, F, and G, with theleversA AKA, the latches C-G, the springs D D, the racks B, B, the three or more springs I I, the fulcrum g, constructed and operated substantially as herein set forth.
