TO ALL WHOM ITI'MAY OONOERN:
Be it know-n that I, ELIJAH BUTTON, of Annapolis, in the county of Anne Arundel, and State of Maryland, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Cork-Extractors; and I -do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear', and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use .the same, reference being had tothe accompanying drawing, forming part of this specication.
This invention relates to a new and improved device for extracting loose corks from bottles, vials, when from any cause they have been pushed through the necks of such bottles or vials.
And it consists of a combination of' springs attached to a rod or spindle, and`formed and used in the manner hereinafter described. p
' The drawing represents a longitudinal section of a vial with the extractor inserted and enclosing a cork.
A is the rod or spindle, formed with a bow or ring at its upper end, as seen at B.
e, eZ, e, andf represent springs, of -steel or any other suitable material, which are attached to the rod A at their upper ends, as seen at g.
At their lower ends they-are attached to a ring, as seen at h. v
One of the spaces between the springs may be broader than the rest, for the reception of the cork.
The manner of using the extractor is as follows:
The extractor is inserted into the bottle orvial, and pushed against the bottom with a. force suteient-to expand the springs, when the cork is enclosed between the springs, as seen in the drawing, and withdrawn with perfect ease. l 4
Less than four springs may be used, if desired, and in many cases two may be found suicient.
These instruments may be'madeiof any desired size, so as to adapt there todifferent-sized bottles and vials, and by their use that-vexatious nuisance, a loating cork, isrreadily abated. I i
I do not confine myself to any particular number of springs, as any number, from three upward, may he used.
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patente'- The cork-extractor, consisting'of springs having their lower ends adapted to turn on the-ring h, all operating as described, whereby the cork is caged lengthwise in the bottle, vwithout turning the latter upside down, as herein shown and described. i
The vabove specication of my invention signed by me, this 23d day of March, 1868.
ELIJ AH BUTTON.
