Description

l No. 805,545. PfvLENT'D DBG. 5, 1905.
A. KRUSE.
DOOR CHECK.
APPLICATION FILED JULY 21, 1'905.
t UNITED STATES -.PATENT oEEIoE.. f
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, ADoLE KRUSE. a citizen of the United States, residing in Hoboken, in
jthe county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful 1mprovements in Door-Checks, of .which the following is a specification.
- This invention relates to an improved safety door-check for doors which is intended'to be used in place of the well-known safety-chains to prevent only the partial opening of the door and prevent forcible entrance.
One lof the objects of the invention is to provide a device of this type which it is imposf sible to unlock or release except `when the door is closed.
' llt is also an object of the invention to furnish a door-check which after having been released is automatically returned to operative Vposition upon the closing of the door.'
With these and other ends in view the in- Ventlon consists 1n the novel features, arrange ments, and combinations of parts to be here- `showing the door and doorcheck in inafter described, and recited in the claims.
[n the accompanying drawings, in Whichcorresponding parts are denoted by similar reference-letters, Figure 1 is a perspective view of one form of the improved door-check. Fig. 2 is a side elevation, partly in section, through the jamb of the door-frame; and Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on line 3 3, Fig. 1, partiallyopen position.
Referring to thedrawings, A 'indicates the jamb of a door-frame, and D the door hinged to said frame. Attached to the jambl A at a point below the lock of the'door is an oblong plate a, which is slightly countersunk in one face of said jamb, as shown. Said plate a is provided at either side with a vertically-disposed lug a', made integral therewith, and between said lugs is pivoted, by means of a pin extending between the same, a hook-shaped checkV member of substantially U shape` the lpivot-ed leg of said member being of greater.
length than the bent-up or outer leg of the same. The inner leg of said member is thus suspended from the lugs o' in such a manner as to lie closely against the door-jamb, and the distance between the upper portions of said legs is greater than at their lower portions for a purpose which will hereinafter appear. The upper extremity of the outer leg of said hookshaped member is provided with an inclined head Attached near the outer edge of the door is Specification of Letters Patent.

yextension-arm clears the head b.
Patented Dec. 5, 1905.
a latch-plate ,upon which is pivoted a lift- I ing-latch f, which is guided in vertical direc Ation by a keeper e, projecting outwardly at right angles from said plate, as shown, and preferably made .integral therewith. The keeper. e is disposed below the pivotalconnection of the hook-shaped check member'h'so that in its position of rest the latch f, which rests upon the keeper e, is retained in horizontal alinement with the enlarged head In' in The latch f is provided at its free end with an offset portion f', eX-
tending at'approximately right angles thereto. A.An extension-arm f2 is made integral with said offset portion and extends parallel to the main portion of said latch in order to take into the open portion of the upwardlydisposed hook b. In order to guide the latch finto the keeperye, the latter is ,provided at` its upper portion with a curved surface e', over which said latch is designed to rido, vas will be vreadily understood. The arm f2, which extends laterally from the offset f', eX`- .tends to quite a distance beyond the member and is provided at its free ends with'an en'- largement f3 for permitting the easy lifting of the same.- l
When the door is locked, the parts are in the position shown in Fig. l, the latch f being retained by its keeper, while the extension or arm f2 takes into the hook b. As soon as the door is opened the lateral motion of the arm f2 is transmitted to the hook b, as said arm abuts against and presses inwardly the bentup leg of said hook, so that the latter iS swung upwardly and into the room, as shown vin Fig.' 3, until the arm f2 after sliding along said hook abuts against the bent portion thereof, and thereby prevents the further` opening of the door. When it' is desired to `open the door, it has to be returned to closed position, after which the latch and extension-arm are lifted by .taking hold of the enlargement f3 so that said latch clears the keeper e and said The door can then be opened, the check member b remaining immovable. When the door is closed again, the extension-arm f2 rides over the inclined head and takes into the member b, while the latch proper rides over the curved portione of the keeper and'drops into the IOO latter, the parts being thus restored to their normal or operative position.
` When it is not desired to use the safetycheck, the latch is moved on itspivot to an angle of two hundred'and seventy degrees, so
IIO
that it is suspended in the position shown in dotted linesl in Fig. l. The door can then be completely opened, all the parts of the safetycheck being rendered inoperative. door-check is in its normal or operative. position, a person leaving the house lifts the latch so as to clear the inclined head and the latchkeeper, then opens the door, and closes it when outside. The extension-arm meanwhile passes over the inclined head of the hookshaped member and drops into said member, While the latch is again in a position to be vertically guided by its keeper. The doorcheck is thereby returned into normal position automatically upon the closing ofthe door and does not have to be adjusted, as is the case With the safety-chains now in use.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. rIhe combination, with a door and doorjamb, of a check member suspended from the latter, and a lifting-latch on the doormovable into and` out of said member.
2. The combination, With a door and doorjamb, of a check member suspended from the latter, and a member on the door movable into and out of coperative relation With said check member only when the latter is in pendent position.
3. In a cheek device for doors, a verticallyswinging hook-shaped member attached to the door-jamb, and a device on the door movable into and out of said member only when the latter is disposed vertically,
4. The combination with the door and doorjamb, of a check member pivoted to the latter, and a lifting-latch on the door movable into and out of cooperative relation with said check member only when the latter is in pendent position.
When the 5. In combination, a latch pivot-ed to the door, and a hook-shaped member on the doorjamb into and out of which said latch is movable, said latch being automatically returned into said member, after release therefrom, upon the closing of the door.
6. The combination, with a door and doorjamb, of a hook-shaped check member suspended from the latter and provided with an inclined head, and a latch pivoted to the door and designed to ride over said head and take into said check member, being slidable therein.
7. In a check device for doors, in combination, a hook-shaped member pivoted to the door-jamb to swing vertically, and a member on the door movable into and out of said firstnamed member, said door member automatically taking into said hook-shaped member when the door is closed.
8. In a check device for doors, the combination, with the door and door-jamb, of acheck member suspended from the latter, and a device on the door movable into cooperative relation with said member only when the latter is in pendent position, and automatically returnable into such relation, after release therefrom, when the door is closed.
9. The combination, with a hook-shaped member pivoted to the door-jamb and provided at the upper end of its outer leg with an inclined head, of a latch pivoted to the door and provided with an extension-arm normally in horizontal alinement with said head.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ADOLF KRUSE.
