Be it known that we, FREDRICK W. DILL and JOHN R. HILL, citizens of the United States, residing at Lincoln, in the county of Lincoln and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toy Guns, of

' which the following is a specification.

This invention consists of a toy pistol or gun particularly designed for use bychildren for shooting small projectiles, such as marbles -or similar objects, at a target.

.The invention resides particularly in the simplicity of construction of the device,

whereby the same may be cheaply manufactured, the invention embodying novel features of construction, which will appear more fully as the description proceeds.

For a full description of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledgeof the details of construction of the means for effecting the result reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section of a gun embodying the invention, dotted lines indicating the. form of a stock having a pistol-grip. Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in both views of the drawings, by the same reference characters. In the practical embodiment of the invention it will be understood that the device may be made in the form of a gun or pistol, the stock being indicated at 1, dotted lines showing the formation of the stock when the device is made as a pistol. The gun is provided with the customary barrel 2, and said barrel may be made in various lengths, according as found best for the purposes of the invention. The barrel 2, however, is provided with a sufficiently large bore to receive small projectiles, such as marbles'or the like.

Mounted for longitudinal movement in the barrel 2 is an ejecting-piston 3, the said piston being normally under the influence of a spring 4, preferably of the coil type, which tends to project the piston to the outer limit of its-movement in the barrel 2. The bore of the barrel 2 is enlarged so as to receive the spring 4, the inner end of said spring having a bearing against the inner extremity of the enlarged portion, as indicated at 5', whereas I Specificationio f llLe tters Patent. the outer end of the spring is in engagement with a shoulder 6 of the piston. I Projecting upwardly from the piston 3 near its rear end portion is a finger-piece 7 which extends through a suitable slot longitudinal of the barrel 2, and said finger-piece is adapted to be grasped in order to retract or pull the piston 3 inwardly in the barrel 2 to set the same preparatory to shooting.

The means for holding the piston 3 in retracted position comprises, essentially, av

ratchet-spring 8, secured to the barrel 2 at 1 one end, as shown-at 9, the opposite end portion of the spring being movable toward and from the piston, preferably at the under side of the latter, and provided with a plurality of teeth 10, which are adapted to engage a lug or projection 11, extending from the rear end portion of the piston. The normal tendency of the spring 8 is to force the teeth 10 thereof into engagement with the projection 11, so

that when the piston 3 is pulled inwardly in r the barrel 2 by means of the finger-piece 7 a .certain one of the teeth 10 will engage the "projection 11 and prevent the piston from being forced outwardly by the spring 4. The provision of the plurality of the teeth 10 enables the piston to, be positioned with the spring 4 exerting a greater or less amount of tension with reference to the piston, this admitting of adjustment of the piston with a view to shooting objects'of different sizes. The spring 8 is connected with the upper extremity of the trigger 12, the latter being arranged in the customary position for this part of a gun or pistol, having a suitable guard13. An arm 14 projects rearwardly from the trigger 12 and is pivoted, as shown at 15, to the a stock 1 in any suitable manner. By pulling the trigger12 the upper end thereof will be forced downwardly and the. spring '8 will be carried in the same direction, causing the tooth 10 of said spring, which is in engagement with the lug or projection 11 of the piston, to be disengaged therefrom, this permitting the spring 4 to force the piston outwardly in the barrel 2 and eject the projectile which has been previously placed in the barrel.

In order that the marble'or other projectile placed in the barrel 2 may not be displaced therefrom when the barrel is inclined downwardly in aiming or in handling the same, said barrel is preferably cut away at its outer end, as at 16, and provided with 'a movable section 16, arranged in the cut-away portion of a concave form in cross-section to conform with the contour of the barrel. This section is caused to frictionally engage the projectile in the barrel, so as to accomplish the desired result above mentioned. The section 16 of the barrel 2 is preferably carried by a springshank 18, substantially attached to the upper portion of the body of the barrel 2, so as to normally hold the section 16 thereof against the projectile which is disposed in the barrel. The section 16 of the barrel does not interfere in any manner whatsoever with the ejection of the projectile by the piston, said section only lightly engaging the projectile, so that the same cannot roll or be displaced from the barrel by gravitating.

Having thus described the invention, What is claimed as new is 1. In a device of the class described, the combination of a stock, a barrel carried by the stock and adapted to receive a projectile, the outer end of the barrel being cut away, a movable section secured to the barrel at the cut-away portion thereof and of concave form in cross-section to conform with the contour of said barrel, and means for. ejecting a projectile from the barrel, and spring means coacting with the movable section of the barrel to cause the same to engage a projectile in said barrel.

2. In a device of the class described, the combination of a stock, a barrel carried by the stock, a piston slidable in said barrel, a spring for actuating the piston, a projection extended from the piston,a ratchet-spring pro.
