To Il w hom t may concern Be it known that '1, RoBERT N. Cox, a citizen of, the United States residing at Waukegan, in the county of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Magazine-Pistols; and [do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear,'and exact description of the in-- veution, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and luse the same. j
This invention relates to magazine pistols and it consists in the novel features hereinafter described and claimed.
An object of the invention is to provide a pistol of the character statedwhichi is of simple' and cludes a cylinder slidably Vmounted in a barrel and spring means for moving the c inder with relation to the'barrel wherebyl is held lat a projected position the cylinder I the barrel when the pistol with relation to is fired.' v
'Afurther object of the invention is to provide a magazine chamber'in the cylindery adapted to retain the balls and a spring actuated followery located in the 'chamber and adapted to move the' balls successively into' the ybore of the cylinder'.
A l'further object of theinvention is to' 'provide a plunger member of improved structurehaving a disk which is interposed between the first mentioned spring and the endof the cylinder.l The plunger member is provided with a lstem portion which isv adapted to move along the bore' of the cylinder and proj ect the ball therefrom. A locking mechanism is provided and is engageable withv the disk to temporarily hold the same at a retracted position `against the tension of the first mentioned spring and the said.locking mechanism may be actuated to release the disk when the pistol is fired.

The barrel 1 is provided at its lower side with spaced flanges 4 and a stop block 5 is secured between the ianges 4 at the yforward ends thereof. A lock member 6 is pivotally mounted between the flanges l at the rear ends thereof and a spring 7 is attached to the barrel and bears against the rear end of forward end lof the stock 5 when the cylinder is projected 'with relation to thev barrel. The cylinder y8 .isprovided with a central longitudinal bore llthat extends from end to end thereof and the cylinder 8 is provided below the bore 11 with a longitudinally disposed magazinechamber 12. An orifice 13 connects Ithe bore 11 with the chamber 12 at the inner portion' thereof and a shunt block 14 is located in the rear end of the chamber 12 at a point behind the vorifice 13. Afollower 15 is slidably mounted in the chamber 12 and a spring 16 is interposed between the forward end of the follower and the forward end ofthe chamber and is under tension with,v a tendency to normally hold vthe follower 15 toward the rear end of the chamber 12. lThe rear portion of the chamber 12 is adapted to retain balls 17 arranged in a row or column and the rear endof the follower Y 15 bears against the end ball of the row.
The bottom wall of the chamber 12 has an elongated slot 12 with a circular opening 13 through which the balls may be placed in the chamber l2. The follower' l5 normally overlies the circular opening 13 to close the same and has a lug 14 formed on one end-that travels in the slot 12 and pro vides a construction whereby said follower may be retracted to open the circular open- Aand which carries at a point between its ends va disk 19 that lits snugly in the barrel at a point behind the cylinder. A relatively heavy coil spring 20 is interposed between the rear end of the barrel 1 and the rear face of the disk 19 and is under tension with a tendency to hold the disk away from the rear end of the barrel. The disk 19 is provided at its lower side with a lug 21 which is received in the'space between the flanges 4 of the barrel. When the plunger 18 is in a retracted position in the barrel, the forward end of the catch 6 engages against the forward surface of the lug 21 and holds the plunger member in a retracted position in the barrel against the tension of the spring 20. A rubber packing washer 22 is interposed between the forward surface of the disk 19 and the rear or inner end of the cylinder 8. The cylinder 8 is provided above the bore 11 with a longitudinally disposed chamber 23 which receives a rod 24 formed on the plunger member 18. A spring 25 is interposed between the forward end of the rod 24 and the forward end of the cylinder '8 and is under tension with a tendency to hold the cylinder at a projected position in relation to the rod 24. The plunger member is further provided with a centrally positioned rod 26 which enters the inner part of the bore 11. `The rod 26 is shorter in length than the rod 24.`
" The pistol may be operated as follows:
"Assuming that the magazine'cha'mber 12 is loaded with balls 17 and it desired to brin'gfone of the balls in the path of the movement of the rod 26, the cylinder 8 is moved to a retracted position in the barrel 1 to engage Y the lug 21 with the lockmember 6. this't-ime, the spring 2,5 is compressed, and when the cylinderA 8 is released, this spring moves it forwardly with respect to I' barrel 1 and the rods 24 and 26 until the lug 9 engages the shoulder 10. This movement of the cylinder 8 carries the orifice 13 beyond the forward end of the rod 26 and the spring 12 causes a ball 17 to' be moved from the magazine chamber 12 into the bore 11 in front of the forward end of the rod 26. Now that the ball is in position in the bore .11, the lock member 6 is actuated whereby its end releases or disengages from the lug 21 of the disk 19 and the plunger member forced 1n a forward direction by the spring 20, whereby the rod 26 strikes the ball and impels 1t 1n a forward direction beyond the end of the muzzle or outlet ofthe bore 11. The sprlng 25 is weaker than the spring 20 and consequently after the pistol'has been fired the spring 25 will be compressed by the rod 24, whereby when' the cylinder 8 is aga1n moved rearwardly to engage the lug 21 with the lock member, the cylinder will. when released, be forced in a forward direc-l tion by the spring 25 and the orifice 13Y will be again moved to a position where itis uncovered from the rod 26, therefore, another ball 17 may enter the bore 11 and this second ball may be projected from the pistol in a manner as herein'before described.
Having described the invention what is claimed is;
derslidably mounted therein and having a bore, and provided at th'e sides of the bore with chambers, one of the chambers being connected with the bore by means of an orilice, a spring pressed follower located in the chamber which is connected with the bore by the orifice, a plunger member slidably mounted in the barrel, a lock mounted upon the barrel and ,engageable with the plunger member'to hold the same in aretracted position, a spring interposedl between the plunger member and the barrel and tending to force the plunger member in a forward direction,.the plunger member having a rod portion which enters one of the chambers in the cylinder, a spring interposed between the forward end of said rod portion and the forward end of the cylinder, said plunger member also having a rod member which enters the bore of the` cylinder.

barrel, a stop member mounted upon the barrel and having a shoulder under which said lug may engage, a plunger member slidably mounted in the barrel and having a portion which enters the bore of one of the cylinders, said plunger member having a rod portion which enters the other chamber of the cylinder, a spring interposed between the end of the cylinder and the last mentween the disk and the rear end `of the barrel,` the last mentioned spring being of greater tension than the first mentioned spring, and a spring actuated catch device mounted upon the barrel and adapted to engage the lug of the disk to hold the plunger member in a retracted position against the tension of the heavier spring.
