To all 101L072; it may concern Be'it known that I, LUIs KoBUoHI, a citizen of Italy, residing'at Smithfield, inthc county of 'Fayette and State of Pennsylvania, have mvented'certam new and useful Improvements in Projectiles, of which the followmgis a'specificationy l The primary object of the present inven tion resides in the provision of a pro ectile embodying a plurality of arms swingingly attached thereto in which the outer faces of "the 'arms"normally housed within the outerfaces of the projectile are provided with forwardly directed saw teeth, the projectile being especially adapted for firing through barbed wire entanglements for severing the same.
A further object of the invention is to provide a projectile having normally retracted arms contained within the sides of the projectile body that are adapted to be swung outwardly from the discharge of the projectile from the gun muzzle having combined therewith high explosive mechanism for firing by a time fuse after the arnis have functioned in severing barbed wire entanglements and the projectile reaches its destination.

Briefly described, the present invention aims to provide a projectile having longitudinal grooves formed at the sides thereof and opening at the outer face, with an arm pivotally mounted at its forward end in the forward ends of the slots and adapted to be projected outwardly by tensioned levers slidably associated with the arms and be so raomc'rnin. Referring more in detail to the accompanying drawing there is shown a projectile of the usual formation embodying a body portion 5 havinga central chamber 6 to contain shrapnel or high explosive with forwardly positioned firing mechanism 7 therefor, the details of which firing mechanism do not enter into thev gist of the present invention, as any other appropriate form or fuse or firing device for the explosive contained within the chamber 6 could be employed. As clearly illustrated, the outer faces of the projectile body 5 are provided with a arms 9 when in their retracted positionsfas 1 shown in Fig. 2 being entirely housed with in the grooves 8. Means is provided for projecting arms 9 and includes a lever 11 pivoted as at 12 iii the rear end of each groove 8 and has a hook 13 at its forward swinging end adapted for sliding reception in the longitudinal slot 14: provided in the arm 9, the rear end of the slot 14 having an offset recess 15 at the rear end thereof adapted to receive the hooked end'13 of the lever 11 when the arms are projectedto their fullest extent to be seatedtherein and prevented from returning to their initial positions in the slots 14 th usto hold the arms 9 distended as indicated in Figs. 1 and 3. The bottom wall of each recess 8 is provided with a socket 16 adjacent the rear end thereof and is adapted to receive an expansion coil spring 17 the outer end of which is sej cured to the lever 11 as at 1,8,the springs bemg heldunder compression with the arms 9 retracted within the bodyof the projectile while the projectile is within the gun tube.
The operation of the device is believed to be plainly obvious, it being noted that immediately upon the discharge of the projectile from the gun tube, the springs 17 will force the levers 11 outwardly which motion is communicated at the pivoted arms 9 until" the hooks 13 of the levers reachthe rear ends of the slot 14 at which time the forward movement of the projectile will cause the arms to swing rearwardly for the seating of the lever hooks in the recesses 15;
thus locking the arms 9 in their outward distended positions. As illustrated, the
arms 9 have their outer faces provided with .saw teeth 9' rendering the projectile highly serviceable in the severance of barbed wire entanglements or in fact any other obstructions with which the arms of the projectile might come into contact while the time fuse may be set to cause an explosion of the pro jectile at any desired time.
