Description

ANN E. WILLIAMS, OF STOCKTON, CALIFORNIA.
STENCILING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 28, 1905.
Application fileo June 10, 1905. Serial No. 264,575.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANN E. WILLIAMS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Stockton, in the county of San Joaquin, State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stenciling Devices, of which the following is .a full, clear, and exact specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
My invention relates to stenciling devices, and my object is to produce such a device as may fit any ordinary sewing machine and one which may be adjusted as desired. This object I accomplish by the peculiar construction and arrangement of partsherein fully set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claims appended.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a sewingmachine with my device attached thereto. Fig. 2 is a view of my improved stenciling device. Fig. 3 is an enlarged view taken on a line a: a: of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 shows a number of different style needles.
1 designates the arm of a sewing-machine provided with the needle-arm 2, which is pro' vided with the usual set-screw 3.
4 is my improved stencil-needle holder provided with a square groove 5, said needleholder being inserted in the needle-arm 2 and held therein by the set-screw 3 and taking the place of the sewing-needle which is employed when the sewing-machine is used in the ordinary manner. Encircling the lower end of said needle-holder is a band 6, through which extends a set-screw 7, said set-screw bearing against the side of the stencil-needle holder opposite the said square groove 5.
8 is the stenciling-needle, provided With a square portion 9, adapted to fit into the groove 5, the portion extending outside of said groove being round and extending a trifle beyond the periphery of the said needle-holder 4. The stenciling-needle 8 is inserted in the holder 4 and then the saidholder is inserted into the driving-shaft 2 and secured therein by means of the set-screw 3, said set-screw also tending to hold the said stenciling-needle in position in the said holder. To prevent the stenciling-- needle from springing or having any untrue movement, the set-screw 7 is tightened, thus binding the band against the protruding portion of the needle 8 and thus holding it securely in position in the groove in the holder 4.
The ordinary presser-bar 9 and presser-foot 10 of the sewing-machine are shown in Fig. 1 in the rear of the needle-bar 2 and needleholder 4, these partsthat is, the presser-bar and the presserfootbeing of the ordinary construction and performing their function in the usual mannerthat is to say, serving, in connection with the feeding mechanism of the sewing-machine, (not shown,) to sustain and feed the material being operated upon by the stenciling-needle.
Thus I have a stenciling device which may be securely attached to any sewing-machine and one which can be adjusted securely in position.
Fig. 4 shows several different styles of needles. These may be used to designate different colors on the stenciled plates. Any number may of course be used.
Many slight changes in the form and details of my invention may be resorted to at will without departing from the spirit thereof. Hence I consider myself entitled to all forms of the invention as may fall within the intent of my claims.
Having thus described my, invention, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A needle-holder for stenciling-needles comprising a member semicircular in crosssection and provided with a longitudinallydisposed groove on its flat side and extending from end to end thereof, a band encircling said member and conforming in shape thereto, and a set-screw passing through the wall of said band and bearing on the convex side of the member.
2. In a stenciling device the combination with the needle-bar of the sewing-machine of a removable stencil-needle holder having a square groove therein, a stencil-needle seated in said groove, and means for binding said stencil-needle therein as set forth.
3. In a stenciling device the combination of a stencil-needle holder adapted to be detachably secured to the needle-bar of a sewing-machine and provided with a square groove in the side thereof, a stenciling-needle seated in said groove and having one side rounded and protruding slightly beyond the periphery of the said holder, and means for binding said needle in said groove as set forth.
4:. In a stenciling device the combination of a stencil-needle holder having a square longitudinal groove therein, said holder being adapted to be inserted in the needle-bar of a In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two su b- IO scribing witnesses.
ANN E. WILLIAMS.
