EDDY T. THOMAS, OF NElV YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR 'IO ALBERT H. JOOELYN, OF SAME PLACE.
ATTACHMENT' HOLDER FOR SEWING-=MACHINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 273,635, dated March 6, 1883. Application filed September 15, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EDDY T. THOMAS, a citizen of the United States.residing at New York city, in the county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Means for Securing Sewing-Machine Attachments in Position, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in means for securing sewing-machine attachments in position, and it relates particularly to that class of sewing-machine attachments which are capable of application to and removal from the sliding or removable plate commonly employed in the bed-plate of sewingmachines.
The nature of my invention will be fully understood by means of the following specification and the drawings annexed, which form part of the same.
Referring to the drawings, Figure l is a plan view of a binder and a portion of so much of a plate ofa sewing-machine with my improvements applied thereto as will illustrate my invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse section on the line w w of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a plan view of a sewing-machiue plate separately. Fig. 4 is a plan view of a binder with my improvements applied thereto. Fig. 5 is an under side view of the plate, showing the locking means in an open position and the attachment removed. Fig. 6 is a similar view, showing the locking means turned and holding the attachment firmly in position for use.
In each of the views similar letters of reference are employed to indicate corresponding parts wherever they occur.
A represents a binder for a sewing-machine, which may be of the ordinary or any other suitable construction, which is secured to a plate, A, which may be of the form shown in the drawings or of any other suitable design.
The plate A on its forward face is provided with a bent extension, A having a portion, a, bent at right angles, or nearly so, to the plate A, and a. portion, a, parallel, or nearly so,with the surface of the said plate A. The extension A of the plate A is adapted to be passed through a slot, 1), formed in the plate B, and
the parts are so formed that when the extension A of the plate A has been so placed the portion a shall rest in the slot b, while the portion a rests against the under side of the plate B. The slot 6 is formed in such position in the plate B, and the extension A is formed on or affixed to the plate A of the sewing-machine attachment, that the delivery end A of the said attachment A shall deliver its work in proper position to be operated upon by the sewing-machine needle.
On the under side of the plate B, I apply a button or plate, 0, secured to the plate B, by preference, by means of a pivot, c. The botton or plate 0 is formed with a long arm, 0, and a short arm, 0 the long arm 0 being formed with a thumb-piece or projection to facilitate turning the plate 0 on its axis and lock the portion a to the under side of the plate B, as shown in Figs. 2 and 6.
In applying my attachment, it is simply necessary to pass the extension A through the slot 12, and when this is done place the plate A flat upon the plate B and turn the locking-plate G into the position shown by Figs. 2 and 6.
To remove the attachment, turn the plate G into the position shown by Fig. 5, then slightly raise the attachment A and plate A, and the extension A will be readily withdrawn from the slot 1).
Although I have shown my invention applied to a binder, it will beevidcnt to any person acquainted with the manufacture and use of sewing-machine attachments that my invention may be readily applied to a great number of other attachments employed in conjunction with sewing-machines.
Having thus described myinventiomwhat I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
1. A sewing-machine attachment having a bent portion so formed as to pass through and under the cloth-supporting surface, in combination with a button fastened to the under side of the clotlrsupporting surface, substan- 5 tially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The combination, with a sewing-machine plate, B, formed with a vertical slot, 1), through its face, and provided with a 1oeking-pieee,-0,. Witness my hand this 12th day of Septempivoted on its under side, of a sewing-machine her, A. D. 1882. attachment having a plate, A, adapted to rest 1 on the upper side of the plate B, and a bent EDDY T. THOMAS. 5 extension, A a, a, the portion abeing adapted to rest in the slot 11, and the portion a to be Witnesses: held by the lookingpiece 0, substantially as THOS. S. HUNTINGTON, shown and described. BERNARD J. KELLY.
