PATENTED NOV. 21, 1905.
11 I. TOMPKINS. FASTENING DEVIGB FOR MATTRESSES.
APPLICATION FILED IA! 18, 1906.
WI TNESSES "UNITED STATES PATENT .OFFICE.
FASTENING DEVICE FOR MATTRESSES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 21, 1905.
Application filed May 18,1905- Serial No. 260,936.
To (tZ whom 2125 may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL I. TOMPKINS, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fastening Devices for Mattresses, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to bed-mattresses and other mattresses designed for use in connection With couches, lounges, divans, and the like; and the object thereof is to provide a mattress of this class with improved means or devices for securing it to a bed-spring or similar spring used in connection with a bed, lounge, d'ivan, or similar article of furniture.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the Views, and in which Figure l is an end view of a mattress provided with my improved means for securing it to a bed-spring, part of the construction being in section; Fig 2, a'side view thereof; and Fig. 3 a section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2, but showing a modification.
In the drawings forming part of this speciflcation, reference being made to Fig. l, I have shown at a an ordinary bed-spring which is secured in the usual manner to a frame consisting of parallel side bars I) and cross end bars 6 Placed on the bed-spring a is a mattress c, to the opposite sides of which and at the bottom of said sides are secured strips d, of canvas or any suitable flexible material, folded longitudinally to form loops or pockets (Z in which are placed longitudinal bars 6, provided at intervals with holes 6 which also extend through the loops (Z of the fabric or other flexible material cl, and connected with the bars 6 are hooks j, which are oblong in form and hooked at both ends, as shown at one of said hooks being passed through the bars e and the other serving as means for connecting the flexible strips d with the bed-spring, as shown at g at the left of Fig. 1.
By my improvementI provide means wh ereby a mattress may be easily, quickly, and conveniently secured to a bed-spring longitudinally of the opposite sides thereof, and this mattress to the spring.
avoids the use of tapes, cords, or similar devices for tying or otherwise securing the It will also be observed that the strips cZ are secured to the bottom portion of the mattress at the opposite sides thereof in such manner that when in use for the purpose described they cover and conceal the opposite side edges of the bed-spring, as shown at it in Fig. 1, and any desired number of the hooksf may be employed.
My improvement is particularly adapted for use in connection with the mattresses and bed-springs of folding beds in which it is necessary to secure the mattress to the spring or to other parts of the frame so that the mattress will be retained in its proper position at all times; but it will be apparent that my said improvement may be applied to mattresses used in connection with any kind of beds and also in connection with lounges, di-
vans, and other articles of this class, especially where the springs and mattresses thereof are adapted to be folded into different positions. In Fig. 3 1 have shown a modification in which a rod z' is substituted for the bar or bars a, and in this case one hook member f 8 of the hook devicesfis passed through the folded strip of canvas d or other flexible ma terial over the rod 2', as clearly shown in said figure; but in both cases or in both forms of construction the hooks f engage the corre- 5' sponding rod or bar in the folded strip (Z in such manner as to admit of their operation. as hereinbefore described.
In the form of construction shown in Figs.
1 and 2 the hook membersf prevent the lon- 9 gitudinal movement of the bars 6 in the pockets or folds formed by folding the strip (1, and when rods a are used the strips (Z may be stitched longitudinally, so as to form pockets in which said rods will fit tightly.
Having fully described my invention, whatI claim as new, and desire'to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A mattress provided with longitudinal strips secured to the bottom side portions I00 thereof and adapted to be folded around the opposite side edges of a bed-spring, and means for securing said strips to said spring, consisting of a bar passed through pockets in said strips and hooks connected with said bars 5 and adapted to engage said spring, substantially as shown and described.
2. A mattress having longitudinal flexible strips secured to the bottom side edges thereof my invention I have signed my name, in presand provided With longitudinal pockets, a rod ence of the subscribing Witnesses, this 11th or bar passed through said pockets, and hooks day of May, 1905.
connected with said rod or bar and adapted to DANIEL I. TOMPKINS. 5 be connected with a bed-sprin, substantially Witnesses:
as shown and described. F. A. STEWART,
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as (J. E. MULREANY.
