To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, AUGUST J. Kunnz- KAMP, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Side Guards for Spring-Mattresses, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to an improvement in metallic mattresses, the object of the invention being to provide a metallic formed or spring mattress having an improved form of side guard, which will prevent the shifting or spreading of the hair on other stuffed mattress, and the rolling of the edges thereof, and which will maintain the same in position in an eil'ective manner and maintain it in its box-like form.

One of the objections to the metallic or spring mattresses in general use, is that the hair or other stuffed mattress which is placed thereon, shifts from one sideto the other, or is so spread in use that its edge rolls over the side edge of themattress, so

that a very unsightly appearance is the re salt.

The present improvement therefore consists of a wire or metallic mattress, which is provided at each side thereof with an im proved longitudinal side guard, and" which side guard. is comparatively simple in its construction and inexpensive to produce, and is of such form and construction that it will maintain the mattress in its original box-like form, by preventing the side edges thereof from spreading or rolling over the side edges of the mattress.

A practical side guard requires that it be under tension so that it will return to its initial position and take up the slack and keep the stufl'ed mattress in its original boxlike form and prevent it from spreading and rolling over the edges of the spring mattress or bottom and also prevent it from shifting on such bottom; it should preferably be of less height than the stuffed mattress; it must be under considerable tension, andthis tension must be constant and,

as stated, any slack which occurs must be talen up immediately; it must also be a part of the spring mattress structure so as to be removable therewith and so that while-not interfering in any Way with the use of the spring mattress in the ordinary manner in which it is used either to sit upon or to sleep upon 1t will keep the 'stnfled mattress in its box-like form and against shifting and spreading, and therefore it must be flexible in order to provide a soft edge at the sides of the mattress and yet this flexibility must not be such as to so that it will yield therewith when the same is under weight, nevertheless, by reason of its end connections, which are unyieldable with the suspensively supported bottom, they will assist in returning the bottom along its side edges to its normal position and to a material extent assist in preventing the sagging thereof. Moreover, it is desirable that the connections between the longitudinally extending member or members making up the side guard shall be such that a different tension can be given to the side guard from that which given to the bottom.

The present improvement may be used with any form of metallic mattress to which it may be desired to connect the side guard, but in the form shown it is connected with a mattress madeup ot' bent longitudinally extending wires connected or coupled together by transversely cxteruling wires, the

two sets of wires comprising links connected together to form the fabric.

these strips are connected together and to the bottom by similarly formed links or wires 12. In practice the side guards'will be ofsomewhat/less height thanthe height. of the stufi'ed mattress, when in its manu factured condition, so that when the mattress is compressed in use the side guard will not project above the plane of the mat;- tress. By connecting the strips with each other and with the bottom by wires it will be observed that the tension imparted to each strip does not necessarily have to be the same as that imparted to its companion strips, or the same as that under which the bottom may be stretched, since the connect-- ing wires will permit-lengthwise movement of the strips relatively to each, other and relatively to the bottom, this also being facilitated by the openings in the strip, which are somewhat larger than the diameter of In consequence the and the side guards under a difl'erent ten- S1011.

In the present improvement it will be observed that the longitudinally extending members are in the form of flat'metal strips connected with each other where two or more thereof are provided and connected to the bottom in such a manner that they will yield and move to a certain-extent with the bottom when the same islunder weight,

but by reason of-the fact that each longitudinally extending member is connected with an upright projection or lug 9, which does not move with the fabric of the bottom,

it follows that the side edges of the mattress are reinforced and the tendency of the same to sag when under weight is to a large extent overcome and that when flexed under weight such side edges of the bottom will be returned to their normal position by reason of the fact that each longitudinally extending strip is'under considerable tension. I claim as my invention:- 7

' 1. A metallic formed mattress comprising a spring bottom, lugs secured one adjacent to each corner thereof and unyieldable, with -tl 1e-;-bottom, a yielding and flexible side guard at each side of the bottom and comprising one or more lengthwise extending fiat metal strips set edgewise to the bottom and connected at the ends with said lugs and provided at close intervals with openings along the same, and'a pair of hookformed wires extend1 ng into each of said openings and connecting the strip or strips with the bottom, the hooks of said wires extending in opposite directions.

'2. A spring mattress comprising a pair of transverse members, a bottom supported therebetween and having each side edge thereof provided with openings, a yielding side guard'carried by the bottom at each side thereof, each of saidside guards comprising an inelastic and an elastic member, the inelastic member consisting of one or more flat metal strips extending lengthwise of and edgewise to said bottom, lugs secured to such transverse members, one adjacent to each corner of the bottom and unyieldable with such bottom, each of such flat metal strips having openings located at intervals alongthe same, and hook formed wires eX-' tending into such openings and hooked into the aforesaid openings of the bottom.
