DISPENSING DEVICE.

UNITED sTATEs PATENT OFFICE.
DISPENSING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 21, 1905.
Application filed February 26, 1904. Serial No. 195,363.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LAWRENCE BARNES HAY- WARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, county of Wayne, State of Michigan, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Dispensing Devices; and I declare the following to be a full, clear, and
exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention has for its object the production of a cap or stopper for packages, for use more particularly in connection with packages of tooth-powder, although it is obvious that it can be used in connection with packages containing either powders or liquids.
The object more particularly is to provide a package with a hinged lid or cap which shall effectually prevent the accidental discharge of the contents and which shall yet enable the contents to be readily discharged when desired.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical section showing a package embodying my invention; Fig. 2, a vertical section illustrating a variation.
In carrying out the invention, A represents the body of the package, having engaged thereto or, if desired, made integral therewith a cap portion B. Suitably engaged to thiscap B, or, if desired, made integral therewith, is a discharge-nozzle C, having its interior bore preferably, although not necessarily, tapered, asshown. Surroundingthedischarge-nozzle is a casing D, one end resting on the cap B and the other closed, as at d, around the portion 0 of the discharge-nozzle, an annular space thus being provided in which the spring-catch for the cap can be located,
' as hereinafter described.
nozzle C when the cap is closed.
opening of the cap, and a spring-catch G may or may not be provided to retain the cap in its closed position.
Preferably I provide on the discharge-nozzle a gelatin cap H, which may be readily slipped on and off, to further prevent the accidental discharge of the contents. By making this cap of gelatin, which is thin and transparent, I am enabled to bring the end of the discharge-nozzle closely adjacent to the top of the cap E, even with the gelatin cap on the nozzle. This is important, since even should the gelatin cap be lost the powder would be retained in the package until the cap E is opened or lifted.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a dispensing device, the combination with the body thereof, of an inwardly-tapering discharge-nozzle, a casing secured to said body and surrounding the discharge-nozzle but diverging therefrom to form a space between the same and the nozzle, a cap hinged to the upper edge of said casing and adapted when closed to cover the end of the discharge- ,nozzle, and a spring located within said space and engaging said cap to move the same.
2. In a dispensing device, the combination with the body thereof, of an inwardly-tapering discharge-nozzle, a casing secured to said body and surrounding the discharge-nozzle but diverging therefrom to form a space between the same and the nozzle, a cap hinged to the upper edge of said casing and adapted when closed to cover the end of the dischargenozzle, a catch located within said space and engaging said cap to retain the same in its closed position, means for operating said catch from the interior of said casing, and a spring also located within said space for engaging said cap, the tension of which tends to swing said cap open.
In testimony whereof I sign this specification in the presence of two witnesses.
LAl/VRENCE B. HAYWARD.
