"INVENTOR WIT/VE88E8: 2 42 A '8' m M m T A UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MARY E. GUDENBURR, on PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
OIL-CAN.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent N0. 625, 162, dated May 16, 1899.
Application filed January 30, 1899. Serial No. 703.804. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern/.-
Be it known that I, MARY E. GUDENBURE, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oil-Cans, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in oil-cans.
The object of my invention is to prevent an access of flame to the explosive vapor that always fills the empty portions of cans partially full of oil, so that the can may be safely used to supply lighted lam ps or brought into any proximity, however close, with the flame without danger of exploding.
A further object of myinvention is to provide an improved spout for cans containing oil or other liquid, which shall be so constructed as to open the discharge-orifice automatically when the can is inclined to pour out the liquid and to close the same also antomatically when the can is raised to a vertical position.
My invention briefly consists of a spout which is attached to the can, having an airvent or passage arranged on the outer end of the spout to almost the upper face of the bottom of the can and a gate arranged in the outer end of the spout on its inner face, which is adapted to open and close automatically by the inversion of the can.
My invention finally consists in the novel combination and arrangement of partshereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In describing the invention in detail reference is bad to the accompanying drawings,
forming a part of this specification, wherein like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views thereof, and in which- Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of my improved oilcan. Fig. 2 is a perspective View of'the spout and air-vent. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the spout. Fig. 4. is an inverted plan view thereof. Fig. 5 is a perspective View of the upper portion of the spout.
Referring to the drawings by referencenumerals, 1 indicates the body of the can,
which is adapted to receive the liquid 2. The
top of the body of the can is provided with a neck 3, which is exteriorly screw-threaded. The neck 3is adapted to have secured thereto the one end of the spout 4 bymeansof forming with this one end of the spout a downwardly-extending exteriorly screw-threaded collar 5.
5 indicates a washer which is mounted upon the neck, as shown.
6 indicates an air-vent which is formed of an elongated hollow tube of suitable diameter and is secured to the inner face ofthe spout, as shown, and extends from the outer end of the spout to almost the inner face of the bottom of the vessel, as shown.
Secured to the inner face of the outer end of the spout 4 is a circular disk 7, which is apertured to allow the outer end of the airvent to fit therein and is cut away semicircular in shape, in which is mounteda half hinge or gate 8. This gate is adapted to be opened by the egress of the liquid, and it is of such construction that when the can is elevated will resume a closed position.
It is evident that this improved spout can be used on cans containing gasolene, benzin, and other highly-inflammable substances as well as oil-cans. i
It willbe noted that various changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the general spirit of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A non-explosive oil-can, comprising in its construction, a body portion having a suitable neck, a spout secured to said neck, a circular disk secured in the outer end of saidv spout, an air-tube secured to one side of the inner .face of said spout and extending with its one end nearly to the base of said body portion and with its other end extending through said disk, and a hinged gate formed of a cut-away portion of said disk, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of twowitnesses.
MARY E. GUDENBURR.
