PETER PARRY, OF EVANSVILLIE, INDIANA.
BOTTLE-STOPPER.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, PETER PARRY, a subject'of the King of England, resident of Evansville, in the county of Vanderburg and State of Indiana, have made a certain new and useful Invention in Bottle-Stoppers; and I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
F gure l is a central vertical section of the invention with the stopper pushed down. Fig. 2 is a similar view with the stopper moved upward. Fig. 3 is a section on the line 33, Fig. 1, with the stopper removed. Fig. 4 is a detail side View of the stopper.
The invention has relation to devices for closing bottles so that they cannot be easily refilled; and it consists in the novel construction and combination of parts, as hereinafter set fort-h.
In the accompanying drawings, the numeral 2, indicates a bottle having a neck 3, at the upper end of which is the filling opening or mouth 4. Below this mouth, at the side of the neck, is a small opening 5, for delivery or discharge of the liquid.
The neck 3, of the bottle, is round or cylindrical in form, except that it is provided on one side with a vertically elongated recess 6, at the lower end of which the small spout or discharge opening 5, is located. Diametrically opposite to the upper end of this elongated recess, is a circular recess 7, also made in the inside wall of the bottle neck. 7
The stopper 8, is made of glass in cylinder form to fit the neck, and is provided with a suitable marginal flange 9, around its upper end, to fit against the margin of the mouth of the bottle neck, when the stopper Specification of Letters Patent.

is closed down. In this lowest or closed down position, a diametrical horizontal hole 10, through the stopper, is at the level of the lower end of the recess 6, and of the spout 5. Each end of this hole is enlarged to pro vide a seat in the side of the stopper for a glass ball 12. The two balls, thus provided for, are located at each end of a spring device 13, having a pushing tension, and being therefore adapted to press the balls out of the recesses in the stopper.
The bottle is designed to be filled before the stopper is inserted into the bottle neck. After filling, the stopper is pushed down in the neck, in such wise that the balls are retained in the stopper recesses by the wall of the bottle neck, until the stopper is closed down. Then the stopper is turned until the ball on one side enters the long recess 6, at its lower end, closing the side spout of the neck, and closing the bottle.
In order to use the contents of the bottle, the stopper is raised, opening the discharge way through the side spout, and, at the same time causing the ball at the other end of the spring to enter the recess 7, opposite the elongated recess, and lock the stopper in place, so that it cannot be pushed in or pulled out or turned around.
